Barclays Debit Card Puzzle

I have had a joint Barclays Current account since 2013, we have a cheque book and debit cards, the cards begin 4658 which I believe is the online full auth card.
When I have asked to upgrade to the contactless version I was always told it needs to be a joint application and needs to be done in a branch.
A few weeks ago my card got damaged and I was sent a new card which was contactless but still began 4658, my wife phoned up to get a contactless card as was told no.
Now this week in internet banking when I logged on I was given the option of applying for a 2nd Barclays account, which is handy for me as I can keep spending money separate but I applied only for a single account in my name, the Debit card arrived this morning and it is contactless but begins 4659 and not 4658, this I understand is the offline version of the card.
Why would they trust me with a offline card on my single account but not my joint account, which has been run perfectly over the years, or is it because it is in joint names and both cards on that account would need to be the same, and they don’t seem keen for some reason giving one to my wife, who actually has never had any credit problems at all.
Thanks

I suspect that your 'belief/understanding' is incorrect.
My Barclays cards numbers start with 4539, and the cards are offline and contactless.
Also, I have FD card with the number starting 4659. It's contactless and offline (I think).0 -
Remember it's the first SIX digits, not four, that determine the type of card.0

4539 is a very old number - I had that with my 'Visa Delta' card when I was a student many years ago. Newer accounts have cards starting 4658 / 4659.
How First Direct number debit cards isn't relevant to Barclays numbering scheme.I suspect that your 'belief/understanding' is incorrect.

I think it's relevant because payment terminals distinguish online and offline cards by their number - without contacting the bank.
The chip says if it can transact offline, it's not done by the card number. On the magnetic stripe one number on the magnetic stripe is either a 0 for offline or 2 for online only.0 -

Its 4659 010 -
Its 4659 01
I think 4659 is the Connect Card ?, I remember being told in the branch when I got my card that there were 2 types of Debit Cards issued, the Connect Electronic and the Connect card, I am sure the electronic version had some limited acceptance in certain places that did not have a live feed, but I could be wrong.0 -

Yes Barclays have 2 types of debit card the connect card is the offline version and can be used in places such as planes trains and boats, that can't always connect online to check funds are available.
The Connect electronic is their online card it will always check to see that funds are available before authorising a payment. If it can't connect then it will automatically decline payments.Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both. :cool:0 -

I have got offline card.
And my card always works at Asda even when I have only £0.10 in my account.
But same card doesn't work at the Gulf petrol station.
How come ?0
