My eldest was the same. She point blank refused to do the test even just to see. She went to the local secondary. They stream them into 8 classes of which she is in the top one. Academically she is doing fantastic, her gcse prediction sheet came a few weeks back and it was all b's with one c as minimum expected. I think so long as they are happy they will push themselves....if you push them they will rebel against it ( like I did!!). My motto is that it's their choice. Dd2 decided herself she wanted to do the test, we had minimal input re extra work etc as I really feel it has to come from them...it will from here on in right? You can't carry them through their whole education. My dd1 kind of regretted her decision not to do the test when she was told the most she could do of science at the high school was double award, and science is one of her top subjects....this now closes a to of doors for university fortunately ..... Other than that, she loves the school, all of the kids in the top class with her all work hard and are like minded with parents who care about their education. It's all good!!! And I was skeptical having come from a grammar school family!!!
What do you think of the high school? What are his main reasons? What would he like to do after school?0 -
I don't think much off it truth be told I went there myself his mean reason is that a lot off his friends are going there ..It will be his Choice in the end this is worst than the actual run up to the score ...It is not over yet~We are all going to hell and guess who Is driving the bus~*Norn Iron club Member 294* (Hi, we’ve had to remove part of your signature. You'll just have to sell it to him haha....if you believe the grammar to be the best option, then go with your gut and gently sway him....maybe he's worried about not making friends? That was my main reason for pushing to go to the secondary, I was the only one in my class that passed(small primary) but I made loads of friends when I got there and there...tell him LOADS of the kids are in the exact same boat having mates all going to secondary school, so there won't be all clicks of kids....in secondary there will be however. Don't give up hope!!0 -
I am one of the lucky ones my son got a B1 in his GL and this is guaranteed to get him into his 1st choice as last year they took up to Ds and they have always taken up to C1s but it really annoys me that parents and children after two months of waiting on test results now have the agonising wait of another 4 months to see what school they get0

My ds has a grade good enough for grammar but after having a chat with school not even my official meeting lol
I'm going tO send him to secondary it gets a great reputation and kids do very well
At it . I wanted grammar all along and could send him with a lower than expected Aqe but that's for my grammar stigma . The child needs to be happy to go to school and I don't feel grammar will suit him .
Re the double award science offered by secondary's this doesn't impact on careers two friends of mine have gone on to do a level science at secondary and uni and working in medical
My child's happiness will
Be my deciding factor not the grammar status0 -
I agree Rainbow being Happy is better than wearing a posh Uniform lol but seriously If a child wants to work they will regardless of where they go~We are all going to hell and guess who Is driving the bus~*Norn Iron club Member 294* (Hi, we’ve had to remove part of your signature. I totally agree rainbomac my two older girls are at local secondary and doing great and doing exactly the same work as any of my friends kids in the grammer schools and that's where my DS would automatically have gone if it wasn't an all girls school lol although in a few years time he would probably love that. I am over the moon that my DS is going to the grammer but only because that's where he has always wanted to go but honestly I don't think it's any better than any other school in my town0

Hello,
Its amazing forum to get lots of details at this stage for confused parent like me. Can someone help me as how the grammar schools admits children during various rounds?. What I understood was during the 1st round, all the 1st preferred schools will get applications, which they will sort out based on the ranking order until the allocated admission number reaches for that particular school. say for example 110 seats, if 1st pref as 120, then AQE scores from 145 to.... the 120th student's mark will be placed in decending order, will assume the lowest (120th student's) score was 85. during the 2nd round if the same school getting another 20 applications, they all fall between 145 and 86, then previous 120th position will go down to 140.. (which means, those new 20 applications will be inserted in the list, which makes earlier 120th place (85mark) to go down to 140, and new 20th place (86mark) to 120th place... and this process repeats, and finally school will list 1-110 list as selected. then 110th place is the lowest cutoff for that school. Is this understanding correct ? if so, how EA will know that a particular child didnt get his 1st preferred school during round 1 and pass it to second pref? which means every school have a minimum cut-off during the 1st round it self?
In Summary, how a school can say they are selected a list of students during their 1st round itself ? if so, do they have a minimum boundary marks ? Can someone please explain? Thanks.0 -
There was a letter along with the AQE score explaining and its on the website I would also ask at your School Meeting .~We are all going to hell and guess who Is driving the bus~*Norn Iron club Member 294* (Hi, we’ve had to remove part of your signature.
