re petrol or derv what kind of mileage and driving do you do?
Short journeys avoid diesel. Less than 20000m per year avoid diesel, In fact the 140/150 ACT petrol engine is supposed to be very good.
Have you looked at the Leon SC? Remarkably similar but not a saloon.

Isn't an Audi A3 just a Skoda Estelle with a different bodyshell?

I'm sure I read somewhere that they are.

Loads more fun with Quattro. RS3 is high on my list for next new car.

The A3 saloon is quite pretty, but they are very colour sensitive.

I saw a mid grey one that looked stunning. Yet a white one with same wheels looked a bit odd.

yes well that's why I was stuck between the choice

I currently do 25,000 miles a year and I have owned the 2.0 tdi and really enjoyed it and got some good mpg

My new job is much closer, so although i'm not 100%, I reckon my mileage could drop to 16,000

I know really that may mean the petrol is a better choice. I just don't know about the over-taking power/general grunt of the 1.4 tsfi compared to the 2.0 tdi.

Fair point also about similar cars/chassis - I just like the interior of the Audi. I recently sat in the new Jag, it was lovely - just too big!

My colour of choice would be the scuba blue - christ only knows why 80% of all them out there them out there are silver/black/white

Re:quattro - Fun in what way? The salesman said that it wouldn't make much of a difference in the ice etc. I really don't know why he said it

I've a Misano Red Sportback, Black Edition in the 170PS 2.0 diesel as a company car. I love it, it's not had an easy life and passed it's first MOT yesterday with 88k on the clock but it's been three years of easy and fun motoring.

Quattro is loads better in the snow. I had a passat 4 motion that I couldn't get stuck when the snow was a foot deep on undriven roads. Loads more traction on roundabouts, no wheel spin when leaving junctions quickly. Stopping on ice will never be helped but being able to set off on it is so much easier with Quattro.
