1.2 is too slow already, don't change it for something even slower! My first car was a 1.5 16v sports coupe!

Get the car in your Mum's name, then have her insure it with your brother as a named driver, via Direct Line he would get a NCB for being named driver.

Either that or shop around and find something affordable, remember, a young persons insurance will never be cheap, you have to find what is affordable

And it may not be a case of when he crashes it, but if. And obviously, hopefully not.

I've always found Tesco to be particularly good - have you tried them? Try to make the excess as high as possible - often the thought of paying out £800 odd quid before getting a new car/fixed car is enough to put them off going around that corner at xmph. !!

This advice is flawed, and quite possibly illegal.

may be illegal but loads of people do it. Insurance companies can't prove that the younger driver is the main driver they just claim they can and come up with stories saying that claims haven't been paid out to put people off.

The problem is that, basically, he's screwed! you can phone round brokers to try and get a decent deal, do the pass plus, get a Thatcham Cat 2 alarm / imobiliser or a tracker but it won't bring it down too much.

The costs are down to people driving without insurance so people having to claim on their own insurance... it's called a vicious circle, insurance is too high so people drive without it and...............

Do you actually have any evidence to back that up?

Ignore the Direct Line "named drivers get no claims" thing unless it is considerably cheaper as you are stuck with DL then who will probably be expensive to offer these gimmicks...

Getting a different car is probably not an option, too much hassle and not really worth it in the long run anyway.

Try insuring it in your brothers name with your mum / dad on it, I get my premiums down by about £50 by putting the girlfriend on it as opposed to not putting her on it... this might help a little.

But in the long run, all you can do really is like it or lump it.... ALL young drivers get stung for insurance in the early days because they are highly likely to be in some kind of bump... its just the way it goes. Getting older and building a no claims plus not having accidents are the only real way to get premiums down.

  • I used to work for Direct line and was constantly amazed by the number of callers who thought they could get round the system by basically lying. The call normally consisted of a policyholder calling to say they had bought a new car, typically a old fiesta or similar - "will that be replacing your BMW sir?" - "um no I have just bought the fiesta as a runaround, by the way can I add my 17 year old daughter to the policy as well?"
"certainly sir - will your daughter be the main driver of the fiesta?"
"um, no I will be" At this point we would just rate the insurance on the 17 year old. This type of call happened all the time and companies are well aware of all the tricks, however if people feel they can mislead insurance companies to buy what will turn out to be a useless piece of paper, please feel free to do so!

Please tell me that you aren't saying that your nephew has his own car, registered and insured in his mother's name, with him as a named (but not the main) driver?

Yes I believe that's the case.
That would be totally dishonest and there's zero chance of his insurer paying out when he crashes it.

I can assure you that my sister-in-law is not a dishonest person.
They have been told to do this by the direct line call operative.
I have warned them against it but direct line told them it was perfectly OK.
    They did not lie.

This make me REALLY MAD if what you are saying is true because basically the call center have been dishonest and put them in this posistion presumably to make a sale(?).

I have warned them about it but I can't get them to believe me if Direct Line say different.
I jsut hope the call tapes are available if there's an accident.

    I'd be worried too.

Worried enough to do a Data Protection request to get hold of a copy of the tape and any notes made on the policy that weren't part of the documentation. ;)

I am a motor underwriter. Experienced claims handlers can spot this a mile off and will not bat an eyelid in voiding a policy. This is a reality not a myth perpetrated by insurers. I'm sure I speak for most of the other users of the forum when I say that it is not helpful to be giving out such illegal, ill-informed and highly dangerous 'advice'.
