What Documents Should I Receive?
Hi everyone,
I am about to purchase a car I viewed the other day. When I go back I want to make sure I walk away with all the necessary documents. Any advice would help, I think I need a slip from their V5 is this correct? And then what happens? Should I be expecting anything else?
Also if they have lost their v5 does this mean I should not purchase the car?
Thanks in advance

Don't forget you have to tax it before you can drive it away - and if it has alloy wheels make sure you have the wheel lock key.0

I personally would not buy a car without a V5 way to many things could go wrong
www.gov.uk/checks-when-buying-a-used-car
have a look at that for useful tips when buying a used car
checking the online MOT and the MOT history is an important thing to do as it will show you any advisories that were given when the MOT was done n0 -
yes email them tonight , and get the mot number , as they are just printed on a piece of a4 and can be easily forged0

Thanks all. I will run those checks, but for clarity, the slip from the v5 is all I need to worry about in terms of documentation?
Thanks0 -
Yes, that's the only document you need to walk away with, the slip from the V5. Check that the existing keeper details / address match and if they don't ask for ID from the person selling to make sure their name matches.
Insurance and Tax should be paid for over the phone before you drive it away.
Checking the MOT history online is a very good idea, you can see if it failed the MOT last year and why, you can see any advisories etc.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -

you need the the V5 new keepers supplement the MOT certificate and any service history that goes with the car
I would also be looking for some kind of receipt with details of the car the amount paid and signed by the seller and by the buyer0 -
www.whatcar.com/images/subscription/usedcarreceipt.pdf
print that off and use it as a check list and a receipt of sale0 -
If they've lost the V5 how have they got the green slip to give you?0
