Currys & Sony out of warranty but not that old?

Hi folks, just wondering if anyone here had any similar experiences or could give a little advice please... We bought my Dad a brand new Sony Bravia 50" TV for Christmas 2013 which was bought and delivered in December, there was the usual 12month warranty but we never took out Currys extended warranty as well, TVs are supposed to last a bit longer than 14months!?

So, just recently the TV seems to have developed a fault, where the menu comes up on the smart TV but the picture behind is just horizontal lines... And there is a crackling noise every so often coming from the back of it. It's only out of warranty by two months and Sony have said they would give 20% off the repair bill, whereas the Currys manager basically wasn't interested as we didn't take out their "Know How" extended warranty.

The TV cost us almost £800!

I just wanted to know if there is something else we can do, can we haggle? Do we have any consumer rights here? I have read a few stories on here where the customer was able to get Currys to fork out...

I personally am disgusted that something so expensive only lasted this long... I've no idea how much it could cost to have fixed.

Any help would be great thanks!

    Yes you do.

Have a read of MSE's Consumer Rights guide, and you will find that you have up to six years to seek a remedy from the seller.

OK thanks! What if they don't budge?

Then read MSE's How to Complain document. :D

It is important that you understand that you may need to prove the item is inherently faulty. That is explained in the first article I linked to.

Also worth ringing Curry's and speaking to their out of warranty team. They deal with SoGA claims on a more central basis, and you may get more luck with them than at store level.

Chances are they will offer you the fault & fix service (£95 plus parts), with your £95 refunded if it is down to a manufacturing fault...as well as the repair completed.

As an alternative, you can get an independent engineer's report stating the fault and it's cause.

Absolutely how it's supposed to work. I definitely know of instances where you may come up against a potentially less than fully competent colleague who will make matters more difficult, so sometimes the call centre route can be easier if they don't budge!

And, from experience (so don't take this as 100% certain), if you do take up the £95 fault & fix, the engineers at the repair centre tend to take the view of "Has it been damaged? No, then it's a manufacturing fault".

Thats my view as well from the replies from those on this website who have sent them away and paid the amount.
