    I'm a fan of free wifi and communication apps like FaceTime etc.

    Much cheaper.

    Of course much cheaper, but not guaranteed...

    Three has the best roaming deal, however the speeds will be much, much slower than you're used to in the UK. No streaming videos etc.

    I've used EE's roaming in the USA before. I think it was £40 for 500mb, which was enough for me, and was worth it considering I didn't need to get my iPhone unlocked etc, plus the speeds aren't restricted.
