SIM Card for USA

I'm going to NY for a week and I was wondering what to do about the phone calls, my company (giffgaff) charges a fortune to use the mobile there, but I've seen that Three has this offer where I could use the mobile and pay local prices? So I could buy a pay-as-you go SIM and have calls to the UK and internet (this could be quite useful)?
Is this correct or am I missing something?

Three is probably your best bet. You'll have to buy a 30 day addon for your PAYG SIM, but it's only £15 and then all your calls and data usage are charged as though you were in the UK.
Another option is to take out a SIM only contract for 1 month. For about £20 you can get unlimited data and 300 mins of calls. Just remember to cancel it when you get home.0 -
I think I would have enough with the £10 one, 500GB, 100 minutes. I'm only there for a week and will probably have wifi where I'm staying.0

We've used a 3 sim twice in the States. Works well - getting a data connection was sometimes a bit dodgy, but you should be fine in NY.0

You'll find free wifi in all the obvious places - cafes, bookshops, libraries etc. You just need to remember to switch off mobile data unless you're actually using it and also keep your location switched off0 -
Is your phone unlocked?0

I don't know if it was just me, but I found data coverage absolutely dreadful in New York with my Three sim - almost unusable. It wasn't even strong enough to find directions on pre-downloaded Google maps a lot of the time!0

Domestic US and other calls are charged at much higher roaming rates unless routed via a UK number.0 -
I'm a fan of free wifi and communication apps like FaceTime etc.
Much cheaper.0 -
Whilst data allowances may be in roaming, the bandwidth is not guaranteed, or indeed likely, to be the same as at home.0

My phone is unlocked yes, and I'm only interested in calls to the UK and internet, i will use whatsapp/fb to communicate with people there, no need to make any phone calls.0
