Li ion batteries can be very dangerous if they have been overcharged, under charged or charged too quickly. They can explode or catch fire. Definitely do not put a dodgy battery in the post!

Seek advice on how to safely dispose of it.

And here is a video of what can happen with damaged Li Ion batteries.

If your battery has started to swell, it must be damaged in some way and could well be dangerous.

Apparently recycling centres usually take Li Ion batteries for recycling, but not sure about damaged ones?

post it in a jiffy bag with proof of posting , on the back of the bag write "danger batteries enclosed" , hopefully the PO clerk will not turn it over in your presence , job done , proof of postage received , you don't care if they don't get it back , put your customer reference number / returns number on the front near your address , do not enclose your name / address in the parcel

And what happens if a post office worker is killed or injured?

the company that it is addressed to , issued the pre paid label (royal mail) that corresponds to returning a battery ,

they have told you that it is legal to post it , and issued a label

after which EVERY parcel going into that company would be checked,

there is no answer , failing them organising collections , perhaps they don,t want warranties?

There's no Law to break RM choose not to accept it to it id their choice. Parcelforce will take it with a label declaring what it is.

    Really? Rm chose to?
Failure to comply with the legal requirements for the transport of dangerous goods
puts lives at risk and is a criminal offence which may be subject to prosecution.
Batteries that are classified as dangerous goods by the latest
edition of the Technical Instructions for Safe Transport of
Dangerous Goods by Air published by the International Civil
Aviation Organization (ICAO) including wet spillable lead
acid/lead alkaline batteries (such as car batteries), lithium
batteries when not sent with or in equipment, damaged
batteries of any type, together with used alkaline, nickel
metal hydride (NiMH) or nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries.

Will you be telling ICAO the rules dont apply?

perhaps RM should spend an hour or 3 by going on ebay and telling ebay to make a clause that batteries cannot be estimated on RM rates , actually make them specify WHICH carrier they are using , same with amazon , then start on shops ,

ebay and amazon would kill 90% of all phone batteries being sent 2nd class in jiffy bags

The main issue is with sending Li Ion and Li polymer batteries due to hazards of fire and explosion.

Strongly suggest OP doesn't keep the damaged battery in the house for the above reasons.

Ask them if they will accept a pic of the swollen battery emailed to them as proof of failure?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
