Customs bill from TNT for Ebay Australia purchase

Hi guys

I was wondering if someone could give me a bot of advice. I bought a car stereo from the Ebay Australia website. I knew it would be coming via Hong Kong and that I would be liable for duty/vat etc because of the price.

The price was 415 Australian Dollars which equated to around £212.
I received the radio about 4 weeks ago and a letter from TNT landed on my doorstep on Saturday wanting £116.42.

The breakdown is

£15.00 Pocessing fee
£86.07 VAT
£15.35 Duty

Looking through the paperwork, the seller has put the value in at £415 instead of 415 AUS$?

I've tried to contact the seller via Ebay but no response yet. I spoke to TNT earlier and they have just told me to send an email to their custom queries team.

Is the onus on me to pay this despite the error or should the seller be sorting it out. I will pay the proper amount due based on the correct price which i work out at £63.76.

Any thoughts folks?

The onus is on you to handle import and customs clearance, unless the seller has agreed to handle export/import matters as part of the contract.

The courier (TNT) has dealt with this on your behalf, hence their processing fee. (Royal Mail would charge £8, but you wouldn't get the package until you paid them this plus the VAT and Duty. So whilst TNT charge more, they don't hold on to the package pending payment).

Forward to TNT a copy of your Ebay payment confirmation email showing AUS$415 and they should be able to sort out the correct VAT amount.

Just to add: remember that vat is also payable on the p&p cost as well as the purchase price.

I make is nearer £66 assuming free P+P and duty at 4%. Probably somewhere between £70-£75 is realistic.

I work it out to be what OP has been charged.

The radio will use non UK radio frequency spacing for both MW and FM So many stations may be inaudible - not a good ides to purchase US or Australia goods.
