Does my nearly new car really need a new clutch?

Hi,

Looking for a bit of advice. Took my daughter's nissan Micra that has 4500 miles on the clock for its first service. Asked them to check the clutch as the bite has always felt a little high. Said it needed a new clutch and quoted 870.

There are no symptoms of slipping or anything else and it's been like this from new. I thought that it maybe just needed adjusting.

Long story short, my late mother bought the car and my daughter inherited It, so she is not the original owner. The service was carried out at a different main dealer from where it was bought.

looking for suggestions on what to do

Thanks.

4500 miles? And they're saying new clutch..........

    unbelievable.
  • It's entirely possible for it to need a new clutch. 4500 miles is more than enough time to wear out a clutch if its been abused/badly used.
  • Thanks both...

I'm minded to go with Stoke's comment. I've driven the car from new and it has always felt a little high and easy to stall. Don't know how my mum drove it really but has never burnt a clutch out before. My two daughts now drive the car mainly with me in it and I make sure that they don't ride the clutch

Pedal height bite point is adjustable. If everything else is fine, and like that from new then I suspect the clutch is fine. Riding the clutch or resting the left foot on the clutch pedal can wear it out sooner, but it doesn't sound like it in this case.
  • Would the symptoms I describe indicate that the clutch is indeed worn?

As far as I can tell, you haven't described any symptoms other than a biting point that's higher than you'd expect/like; that alone doesn't scream 'knackered clutch' to me.

Don't go with what you want to hear, it's usually wrong
  • Thanks again...
@burlington6, it's not about whether it's what I want to hear, I don't want to be ripped off to the tune of 870... If it needs a new clutch then it does.

If it doesn't slip then do nothing.

Maybe take it to another garage and get them to adjust the cable, if it's not hydraulic.

Take it in to a local recommended garage and see what they think - dealer prices are commonly rip offs and in my experience, have over exaggerated the issue and said more things need doing than what they did.
