renting flat for 6 months need broadband

Hi Guys

I am about to move to a flat for 6 months short term to be closer to my mother who is battling a terminal illness. I will only need broadband there and not a home phone. Most deals are for 12 months has anyone come across a cheap broadband deal that I can take out for 6 months.

Thanks in advance for any help or info

The best option I can think of is Post Office Essentials - no contract on the phone line and 12 months on the broadband (so you'd be looking at an early termination fee of ~£30) - http://www.postoffice.co.uk/broadband-phone/essential. There may be others out there though - have you tried a comparison site?

What things do you intend to use broadband for and what do you estimate your monthly data usage will be?

If you don't intend to use video streaming like iPlayer, Netflix, YouTube, etc.. or download games from Steam, etc.. then it would be more convenient and cheaper to get mobile broadband via a dongle on a 30 day rolling contract.

Hi Dshep. I am sorry about your Mother and for you and your family who I am sure are having trying times.

I am looking at short term broadband right now for one of my Sons, who also is moving into a flat for six months.

Plusnet do a No Contract deal and it is £60 for connection, router and I think that was also the first month rental.up front and then £28.44 per month for U/L standard BB.

I am with TalkTalk and with them you can transfer to another property for free but you have to take out a new 18 month contract. I don't know if other providers offer similar. I am toying with the idea of transferring my BB to his property on that basis and taking out a new contract at mine.

Another option is mobile data. I was looking at Gifgaf. For £12 you can get 3GB per month plus calls and texts. I have not checked yet if you can teather on their system.

A further option is Fon if there is a suitable source for picking that up in your new flat. You will need to get one of their routers and have somewhere you can plug it in for ten minutes or so a week. Make sure you do not get one of the routers which no longer works with their system though. Or if you know someone with BT and Fon they may be prepared to give you their log in details.

And yet another option would be to ask someone in the flats if you could pay them to use their BB. My Son is providing that service for a number of people on cable where he lives.

2 years ago in a previous house I signed up for the plusnet no contract deal. Great service and ended up getting £80 back through TCB for signing up even though i'm pretty sure the terms said it didn't count towards rolling contracts.
