TV & INTERNET only???

I currently have the lowest package with Virgin of Tv and Internet and this is costing me £50 a month. I dont watch tv as I have freeview in my bedroom and the kids just watch Cartoon Network. We also have the fibre optic broadband.
I have been looking online for something cheaper but nearly every single one, I need to have a phone line. I dont have a phone line running through my house and if I were to get one - BT would charge roughly £200 to set one up and the connection fee. Plus I have unlimited calls on my mobile so dont see the point paying twice for phone use.
Does anyone know something I dont know? Where I can get a cheap tv and internet package and not have to get a phone line?
Also, internet wise, I have only ever been with Virgin since living by myself (7yrs) so have always had unlimited downloads etc. What is the other broadband like? (the ones that arent fibre optic)
Thanks in advance

Broadband requires a cable to give you the signal either a Virgin Cable or a BT Cable .You are paying not for the phone but the infrastructure that broadband travels down .
This is paid for as Line Rental additional phone package/ use not required as long as you pay line rental .
Probably VM are the cheapest in this regard as its bundled ...
No line then broadband is via satellite or mobile dongle both very expensive .0 -
Going to a non-fibre adsl broadband would be considerably slower. Wether this would be noticeable to you or not would depend how you tend to use it.
If you already have tv and broadband with virgin, i would suggest getting a phone line with them as well, as it wont cost you anything, and in some cases can infact be cheaper. That depends if you plan to keep the tv or not thou and could save more switching to broadband only with virgin, and just using Freeview (assuming you have an aerial)
The big bang bundle would give you 100mb broadband, tv (which includes cartoon network) and phone for £49/month0 -
BT charge around £130 for a new line provision-but anyone who pays the rack rate is foolish. There are plenty of providers who will do this from £0 upwards depending on tariff value and duration. Plusnet for example quote c. £49 on a line rental and broadband tariff. Others such as Sky may be cheaper-everything is negotiable. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I have my broadband from Virgin. I pay £21 a month.
I then usually get my TV from Sky but only on a 50% off deal, so usually pay £16 a month for it.
No line rental or unwanted phone0 -
You can get broadband from Virgin without TV or phone.

Yes, but the standalone broadband price of £21 effectively adds in the cost of line rental, whether you take it or not. You are paying a very high price for broadband alone. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Having a telephone line is not so bad. There's Line Rental Saver, where you pays less by paying one year in advance. The cashback when you sign up to a new contract also contributes towards the line rental. You can switch again next year, and get the same deal more or less again.
Use this to get an idea of what kind of speed you can expect from a fibre and non-fibre connection.

If you are far away from a BT exchange, and you won't get a decent speed anyway, then stick with Virgin Media.
If you can get better than 10Mbps from non-fibre broadband, you are laughing.0 -
I phoned VM today to give 30 days notice to cancel my Tivo. I was told that I couldn't quite do that but needed to change packages. I said I was thinking of going totally to Plusnet. After bad mouthing Plusenet I was told I could have thr broadband & landline package for £24.49 a month. I thought about it & phoned them back & accepted. Oh, & the 30 days notice I HAD to give for Tivo cancelation? When I got off the phone that had immediately changed the package & canceled the Tivo! And there was me thinking I had time to rewatch Strictly Come Dancing episodes that I had recorded!!!:j I hope my comment helps :T0
