!!!!!! has it right - are the floors solid, if not could it be getting through the crawlspace? Could the smell be coming from there? Loft bricked up or can you see through to next door? Are your windows well sealed? Any possibility that there are gaps/damage somewhere in the party wall?

Are they smoking outside or wafting the smoke out of the house and the smell is coming through airbricks/badly sealed windows/doors etc?

You need to find how the smell is entering the property as this could be a way for smoke or fire to enter the property in the worst case

This is what im wondering, is it coming through the walls/floors..

is there anyway I can seal up the floors? they are just floorboards with crawlspace underneath.. I don't have carpet in the spare room and that's the room I can smell it in really badly... also I have a cupboard in the spare room which has no back, its just the wall behind it and I can smell it really badly when I open the cupboard too.

The windows are well sealed - they were brand new a few years ago but I very rarely have the windows open in the spare room - certainly not open when I can smell it anyway....

I've been up in the loft and everything seems to be well sealed that I can see. I don't think they are smoking it outside - it was chucking it down the other day when I could smell it so they would have got very wet if they were!
  • You will never seal it off totally in an old semi, these days they have to use special building techniques to make air tight passive houses.

If you lift the floor boards are there any gaps in the party wall or around the floor joists etc. Expanding foam in these gaps will prevent a path for air.

What's the possibility of reporting a strage smell to environmental health, playing dumb, and if they inspect it and can tell what it is would they be obliged to report it?

If, as I suspect, the smell is coming through the crawlspace, you could reduce the smells and save money on your bills getting through by insulating the floor, but it may never totally eliminate the smell as there has to be some movement of air between the room and beneath the floor. Definitely worth re-examining the party wall both in the loft and under the boards and checking for gaps too.
