smell of weed from next door.....

Hi All.

I recently bought a semi detached property and when I went to view it next doors garden had rubbish in (doors, tiles etc) and garden was overgrown... I was told by vendors that the house was inherited by the son of the recently deceased and they were doing it up.... anyway, there doesn't seem to be any evidence of that whatsoever, no sign of clearing anything up and there is no "son" there just a woman and her teenage kids.

Bit cheesed off about that because had I known, I would never have bought the place I just assumed that it was going to be sorted out at some point so didn't worry!

Anyway I guess that's my own fault and i'll just have to live with it....so every evening I can smell them smoking weed next door....I don't have the windows open so it's obviously coming through some other way

Is there anyway I can stop the smell coming through to my side??

  • Would reporting them to the police work?

Police. Although I doubt that would stop them.

We had the same problem in a flat. Moved out in the end.

lol I still don't think they would get the message!

Only trouble with phoning the police is that they know it would be me as I'm the only one attached to them...

I just don't want to create trouble for myself - they could make my life hell if they wanted to and I've had bad experiences in the past whereby my previous neighbours were very antisocial ( I swear bad neighbours follow me around!!) and asking them to stop swearing/screaming/letting their dog out at 2am to bark constantly just made the problems 100 times worse so I don't want a repeat of that to be honest!
  • You need to create a positive pressure in your house, you can get fans that gently blow air from your loft into the house.

There are plenty of ways of shopping them to the police etc without actually using the phone or giving your name !!!

Use crimestoppers, you don't have to give any details

I can't see the police taking any action if it is personal use. Now if there was a cannabis farm that would be different.

If it is coming through the walls that is something you need to look at as it shouldn't happen. If they smoked tobacco rather than cannabis then you would have the same problem. You need to investigate this problem.

but they will still know its me regardless of the fact that I remain anonymous... no one else will know they smoke weed as they don't smoke it outdoors therefore only culprit must be me....

!!!!!! has it right - are the floors solid, if not could it be getting through the crawlspace? Could the smell be coming from there? Loft bricked up or can you see through to next door? Are your windows well sealed? Any possibility that there are gaps/damage somewhere in the party wall?

Are they smoking outside or wafting the smoke out of the house and the smell is coming through airbricks/badly sealed windows/doors etc?

You need to find how the smell is entering the property as this could be a way for smoke or fire to enter the property in the worst case
