As far as I have always understood it, the only rebate of car tax you can get is for the full months left on it.
However, it may be worth giving DVLA a ring to see if there is any way you can backdate it:

I got HRM backdated to last Oct, tried to get car tax bacdated but was told NO, can only claim for what is left to run on tax. I am getting motability car next week so have decided not to claim for it as I am hoping it will help sell my own car, it still has 6 months on it. Motability will come with free tax anyway.0

Page 2 of DLA403 informs, if your ved runs out while awaiting an exemption cert (which you have been awaiting since July06) "buy another road tax disc in the usual way. When you get the certificate you can ask for your money back from the DVLA"
It's wording then becomes a bit confusing as it then refers to refunds only available for full months still to run.You are looking for a refund on ved which you should have been exempt from.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
You CAN get your money back but in practice they will not give it back!0

You CAN and you SHOULD get a refund but in practice they won't refund therefore they won't backdate it at all.0

Remember you have to tax the car at the local DVLA centre for the first time as it is also a change of taxation class. I think you can get a refund form from the DVLA at the same time, swap discs over while there and see if they will take the disc in there (not sure if they do this) I know they can't offer refunds there, but they might be able to take the form/disc in for you.
You must get the certificate sent out first though. The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

I got mine backdated last year with a strong worded letter stating that if they had accepted that I was disabled from such a date then it would be discrimination if they didnt backdate the car tax. I received a cheque for the exact amount from the date I was awarded HRM.
