I have engineered wood flooring with a nice large rug.

Looks much nicer and has a better, hogher quality look and feel to it than laminate.

If you go to a proper flooring shop, not the likes of B&Q or Wickes, you'll find it can be had for about the same price as the large sheds' laminate :)

I would go with cheap carpet which can be replaced frequently. Would engineered wood stand up to their claws and scratching?

Also depends what you mean by dog friendly. We have laminate in the hall and the dog still charges down the stairs, skids across the floor and slams into the front door on a regular basis.

We have 2 different makes of engineered wood, the one in the dining room shows all scratches but the one in the lounge and hall does not even though if you look closely there are loads. Wooden floors are much easier to clean than carpets but one of my dogs still has trouble walking on it even after 5 years.

Tiles, we have engineered oak upstairs but the tiles are much more durable.

Dog friendly ? As in friendly to the dog ? If so, good question - and not often considered.

Our (now ex) elderly retriever couldn't cope with laminate floor. Too slippery for his elderly feet and dicky hips. Several times we ended up dashing for the dog towels (got into the routine of putting them down in the morning when he first went out, as that was when he was wobbliest) to put round him so he had traction when we hauled him to his feet again.

Big dogs - especially when elderly - and slippery / smooth floors do not mix.

For enjoyment, a hard floor is unbeatable. Watching the dog run on the spot because he can't get a grip or sliding along because his brakes don't work is most enjoyable.

However, there are some very nice carpets that are stain resistant. They are completely made out of man-made fibres but look like wool. Can't remember the name but I am sure a carpet shop would know. We have it in the lounge and it looks as new despite the occasional accident.

  • We have engineered oak flooring too. It's not cheap but I must say its easy to keep clean when you have cats and dogs, even if when they start to run it looks like scooby doo! :)

we have the luxury vinyl stuff- small dog has quickly got the hang of a sliding stop to chase things etc. Doesn't go upstairs so running down and sliding into the door not an issue

Easy to clean, good with the underfloor heating too

Would agree that for small dogs (and puppies) - Jack Russells in particular, they don't just give up - hard floors are better value than the TV license :rotfl:.
  • dog friendly in the sense of a matt surface, but also as I foster for a rescue I have to housetrain many dogs and no matter how often I clean up the little accidents the carpets still smell so need something that I can mop over everyday
