the contravention is 'PARKED IN A PARKING PLACE OR AREA NOT' (it finishes after 'not' which I don't get)

The full text should read 'Parked in a parking space or area not designated for that class of vehicle'. Is the sign identical to one on page 46 of the below link?

Can you post the actual street name or a picture of the sign?

You can upload pictures to tinypic.com for free.

...The only signage is a white P on a blue back ground with a car underneath it ...
On the face of it, that means cars only parking.

Example of the approved signage here: http://m.tsrgd.co.uk/signs.html?id=4

I guess the avenue to explore is what is meant by a 'car', and see if there is any way that your van is allowed.

I happen to have the vehicle tax form for my vehicle in front of me, and notice that the tax class is 'diesel car' - so maybe it goes from that?

if that is the case and OPs vehicle is not a transformer type van such as a van with windows and installable seats then they have been caught bang to rights

I think they make it up as they go along.

I had a similar problem with our local council tip who classed my 7 seat Land Rover as a commercial vehicle but my 5 seat Range Rover as a car.

Both say "Light 4x4 utility" on the V5.

I would get photo's because if all that is there is a blue background with a white P and no other sign then you can park a bus there if you wish
Someone please tell me what money is
  • Sounds like unless it is a van derived car there is a problem. Also there can be problems with sign written cars and vans.

Best thing to do is ring the council and talk to them. It may be that the restriction was introduced because of complaints from residents.

Yes its identical to that sign and its on a crescent road, yet the motor cycle wasnt done despite there being NO sign saying they are allowed to park there. The restriction was introduced because there is a large hotel next door and coaches/buses to the hotel and town centre were using the crescent to park up for the day. Think all he can do is appeal it and talk to the council because its so stupid. thanks for your help guys!

i hear this arguement from plebs all the time. "i got a fine/ticket/penalty for this but the other person didn't.. waaa waaa waaaaa".

    1) it's none of your business
    2) the fact that the other person didn't does not invalidate your ticket
    3) maybe, just maybe.. the other person is not violating the parking because they did not break any rules. E.g. sign means cars AND smaller vehicles.
