board and plaster ceilings, how much in Yorkshire

Hi
I have just got the keys to my new house today so time now to start all the hard work and oh isn't there alot of it.
Can anyone give me a rough idea how much it should cost to plasterboard and skim a ceiling.
I have a few rooms where it needs doing.
In the living room, I am going to try and remove the tiles on ceiling as putting board and plaster would take it into the cornicing.
I'm sure this is going to be the first of many questions I will have.
Thanks
Jules

Hi jules,to give you a rough guide i charge between £250 & £300 to board and skim an average size ceiling (4m x 4m). But if your going to have other ceilings i would try to get a bit of discount;) .

Boarding's a relatively easy DIY job. Me and me dad did it no problem. Then a skim should only cost £50 or something as its only a coupke of hours work, if that.

Welll, my dad and I boarded my kitchen and bathroom ceilings. And a plasterer mate skimmed both of them in a couple of hours for free.

And a mate at work had a wall skimmed for £60 recently. I know ceilings take more skill, but it's not much slower really. My mate was finished in no time. And they look good. :)

Alternatively, instead of plastering, you can artex yourself. Slap the goo on and make patterns/swirls/dabs as you see fit.

Out of interest, how many days work is each ceiling for you? I can't see it being more than a day surely? If not, that's £250 a day, which is a hell of a lot more than I take home a day and a lot more than I'd be willing to pay.

Still everyone's different. I personally try and use tradesman as little as possible. Some people get them in for all sorts.

Sorry to jump on your bit of banter with Jasons but I was curious ixwood, are you self employed in your chosen career?
  • Thanks for your replies, they are helpful.
The builder talked about putting lining paper on the ceiling and painting it as a cheaper way of doing it but I think that would be old fasioned and I want to have a good finish on the house.
What are peoples thoughts on plaster boarding and skimming below the original ceiling?
Today we have to start trying to take the tiles off of the living room and kitchen ceilings.
I have read that some people have found it not too bad taking the tiles off but getting the glue off is another matter. Someone mentioned using a steamer but said the water from it burns you when holding up.
Any tips or thoughts greatly appreciated.

You should be able to board over over the old celling, as far as i know. As long as the screws can pull it tight against the old one.

Cargo, no, I'm not self employed.
