As long as you don't have a cat, put clay-based cat litter in them. (Fill the foot of an old pair of tights with cat litter, and leave it in the shoe for 24 hours). That'll absorb the smell. Obviously, if you have a cat, give that one a miss. It won't solve the problem, but add to it!!

If you can get them to rub some tea-tree cream into their feet before they put their socks on in the mornings, then it can really help with stinky shoes. My younger brother's shoes were toxic but after a few weeks with the tea-tree cream, they smelt a million times fresher.

Another one for this, but use tea tree oil instead.

Flick a few drops into each shoe and leave them to dry out. It works a treat. I always have issues with cheaper man made inners/soles. Ok with all leather interiors though. Mine don't stink, just smell like hamster cages ! lol

You need to kill the bacteria in the shoes, spray them with disinfectant when he takes the off.
Does he wash his feet daily?

You're dead right Tigsteroonie. Some of the shoes aren't too bad, but some are absolutely poisonous.

So far, I've put baking soda inside, put each pair in a carrier bag and tied the handles. When we opened the conservatory door this morning, the smell was still there in the background, but didn't knock you backwards.

I can suggest they use deodorant on their feet and cross my fingers that they will, sleepymans.

mandragora we have 3 cats and the shoes are in the same room we lock the cats in at at night. Might make the boys throw a few pairs away though if they thought the cats had wet in them!! hahaha

theEnd, they've already had a clear out and thrown a few pairs away. Why would you want to keep old smelly shoes I don't know, but they do.

Tee tree oil has been suggested a few time, so I'll try that next.
I love a bargain. Now mortgage and debt free. hurray!!:smileyhea

I have used this before in my ballet pumps, and it keeps them fresh again for another week. I only spray them once a week also. Maybe leave it on the rack, and ask them to spray their shoes when they take them off once they're home?

Have you consider shoe cabinet instead of putting it on rack?

the smell would stay within cabinet as far as you get the door shut.
Also, have you try Neutradol Gel Odour Destroyer?

Sometimes it's the materials the shoes are made out of (plastics and synthetic fibers especially) and there's just nothing you can do.

I have been getting rid of all my synthetic shoes as I find they just make my feet sweat and stink and encourage athlete's foot. Yuck.

Which is another point -- have they all checked for signs of athlete's foot? It's really common and that could also be an issue.

Bacteria make the smells, and the smells are often acidic - tea tree can help with the bacteria, bicarbonate of soda with the acidity :)
  • I heard if you put your smelly shoes in the freezer for a couple of day it kills the bacteria that actually cause the smell - Just dont forget about them :D
