What contactless payments have you made over £10 ?

Whenever I use my contactless credit card for something small, like a burger or coffee or such like it gets accepted immediately. Whenever I try to use it for something costing over about £10, it gets declined and I have to do chip and pin.

I just tried it again for something £12.99 at a local chemist, and the staff behind the counter gave me a receipt saying "Declined 05 NOT AUTHORISED" and then asked for an alternative method of payment. She wouldn't even let me use the same card.

Its beginning to seem like using contactless is making my checkout experience take longer and more embarrassing. I'm now inclined to only use it for purchases of £5 or less.

Is this really what the banks want?

    I've used it at Co Op and McDonalds to name two for transactions >£10.

    I've had it default to PIN once or twice, but I used contactless more than PIN so I always guess this is just the odd safety check.

    £17ish is my record in Wetherspoons.

    Rarely have a problem with it.

    Regularly use contactless in Waitrose and Aldi for purchases over £10. Never a problem.

    Perhaps it is a problem with your bank/card rather than an actual contactless payment issue.

    Give them a call, tell them what keeps happening and ask them what the problem could be.

    I've never been asked for my PIN even, though I don't recall ever making more than two contactless transactions in a row.

    Had no problems with it. Occassionally I get asked to enter the PIN but more often than not, it tends to go through. Even on purchases over £10.

    My last purchase was £18.09 in Tescos and that went through fine.

    I often make purchases between £10 and £20 by contactless card, once recently for exactly £20. Rarely I have to enter a PIN.

    Did your card have sufficient AVAILABLE balance at the time you attempted your purchases? Pre-authorisation can mean a sum being reserved before the actual payment is due. e.g. Tesco grocery deliveries are charged to a card on the day of delivery but £2 is reserved at the time that the order is placed.

    The only time that I have had my pre-paid card refused was because I had allowed my balance to run low and the above made the difference.

    I don't use contactless so I can't comment on that, but are you saying that the shop assistant refused to let you use the same card for C&P after the contactless decline? While a retailer can refuse payment at a whim it seems to me that they didn't understand why the card was declined and that they really should have no reason not to let you try a different payment method with that card.
