Carer problem

Hi all.

Can anybody please help me with my problem? My wife who has been my carer for the last fifteen years is leaving me, So what do I have to say to the Dla I get the higher rate care component, And the higher rate mobility component, I also get the road tax for the car.
Can I use my next door neighbour as my carer?
As I won't have my wife driving me anymore because she is taking the car, I will either have to use my mobility scooter, Or taxi's to take me to the doctor's, hospital and shopping etc does this affect my mobility component?
Thank you in advance.

She can't take car if it's yours instead of mobility payment.

She cannot take the car. If she tries, inform Motability and have her name removed as a named driver. You can then have another named person as your driver. If there is no one suitable, Motability might allow you to end your contract with them early. You would then have the money paid into your account to pay for taxis.

You can choose whomever you want as your carer. If they are going to claim Carer's Allowance, they need to fulfil the criteria (care for you at least 35 hours a week, earn less than £102 a week, not be a full time student, etc). Even if they don't intend to claim CA, if your wife claims it, you might want to inform hem that she is no longer your carer.

Thank you for your quick reply to my question.
I'm letting her have the car as part of the splitting up, And I'm not allowed to drive because of my epilepsy history, She fully understands that she will have to tax the car and pay for It from the day she leaves, As she will not be driving me from that day.
As I said it puts me in the position of either using my scooter or using taxis, Until such time that I have some one to drive me, Or get clearance from the Dvla to drive a car.
Once again thank you for your help.

You can't give her the car as you don't own it though - Motability own it. You just hire it.

If the car is from motorbility it is legally are morally got to stay with you. I would advice making a list of benefits you get and checking if they need to be informed of change of circumstances and making sure utilities are in your name. Can you manage own finacial affairs or do you need help? If so make sure you sort that and don't get yourself into a mess with it

  • The OP didn't say it was a motability car, and since he refers to getting free tax for it, I assumed that it was not a motability car. Is this correct, OP?
  • Sorry some misunderstanding here. I bought the car for my wife, It is not a mobility car, It was a present I bought as new a number of years ago, However the road tax was Disabled class and free, But my wife will have to pay the full road tax from the day she leaves me as I will not benefit from being In the car anymore.

So what do I need to do ref the road tax benefit? And what should I do If I go on and buy another car?

Apologies, I assumed that it was a mobility car.

I think that the tax disc used to have to be returned, but now that there are no tax discs, I'm not sure what happens. Is there a part on the log book to change class?

If you choose to purchase another car, you should be able to apply for free tax if you receive high rate mobility DLA or enhanced rate PIP.

She will have to have it reclassified on the V5 from disabled so she then becomes libel for the road tax and insurance.
Someone please tell me what money is
