As properties change ownership, any property that does not currently have CRL noted in it's deeds cannot have any future liability.
But any property that does have CRL liability could be unsellable. Certainly indemnities would not be available any more
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

If any church could determine that all affected properties had the insurance then calling it in would transfer money from the insurance companies to a (probably) nice old building. I find this a nice, if impractical, thing to contemplate.

This might seem like a cosy thought, but sadly, the only reason that this type of insurance has been recently invented, is as a result of the church's thuggish behaviour in going after *uninsured* property owners for huge sums using this archaic law as justification. The most well known case being the Wallbanks:

All it would take is for the wealthy Church of England to publicly say it will never ask neighbours to repair a church they have no interest in. Can you imagine the squealing on here if neighbours were forced to contribute to repairing a mosque or Sikh temple they had never set foot in?

I guess the insurance companies are in many cases betting that they won't actually have a high enough proportion of the market covered for this logic to occur.

No, it would transfer money from all the people who had paid the premiums.

I thought there was a palimentary bill in 2014 about this although I do not know the outcome
First reading on 16 July 2014, no further direct action since then, though a second reading is contemplated sometime after the general election. There was a House of Lords debate on the subject on 15 January 2015.

At the moment unless there is a registration there is no chancel repair liability on any property sold after 2013. that'll gradually reduce the number of properties where this uncertainty remains. It should also eliminate the reason to carry out liability checks or buy insurance because the state will be definitively known.

Those considering signing the petition may wish to consider that it is advanced by the National Secular Society, whose views they may or may not agree with.

The churches (all varieties and religions) are awash with real wealth, gold, antiquities, artworks and buildings. They make out an individual parish is too poor to carry out it's own repairs. There seems to be no wish to dig into it's own coffers to maintain those properties it owns

The difference, of course, is that neither Islam nor Sikhism are the established religion of this country. Anglicanism is.

    That's nice, dear.

Whether you like it or not, it's a fact of life. and it's unlikely to change. Live with it or move. Scotland or Wales would do, since they don't have an established church.

I like the euphemism "established church" to describe the state religion we have in this country.

It's only unlikely to change as long as the majority do not want it to change...
