Am I eligible for compensation?

Hi there,
I was working in Mauritius in January and the flight home was delayed by nearly 20 hours, due to the incoming flight being diverted because of a passenger illness on the plane. The crew were then over their allocated hours and could not continue the flight to Mauritius.

While I have every sympathy for the person who was ill and the passengers on the incoming flight, BA made the choice to treat us as part of that flight and considered us only in the context of being a returning flight.

The delay actually cost me a lot of money as it prevented me working on a project for which I would have received a good pay day.

My question really is about whether each flight is treated individually or whether the airline is entitled to conjoin an incoming flight with an outgoing flight, or in other words, once they realised that the incoming flight was going to be delayed by such a substantial time, should they have made efforts to send a plane to collect those people already in Mauritius.

Now I know many of you may say that I was lucky to be delayed in Mauritius rather than Mogadishu, but as I say, it cost me money and BA did not do a very good job of letting us know about the delay. It was pure luck that I was in the same hotel as the air crew and learned about the delay from them.
