unless you use the ccleaner, tools, startup option to (intelligently) tidy your machines startup items, ccleaner will have no positive effect on computer speed, and neither will an mvps hosts file - the latter can have a negative effect as the browser will constantly be trying to fetch data from blocked advertisement sites
Turn off active monitoring, you don't need it.Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0 -
Thank you all for your replies
All I can say is since using Ccleaner last night my laptop is very speedy for browsing.
I have disabled the monitoring in all its forms, thank you everyone.0 -
Clearing your browser cache will often speed up browsing. Ccleaner does that but you can also do it directly in the browser.0

mvps hosts file - the latter can have a negative effect as the browser will constantly be trying to fetch data from blocked advertisement sites
If a domain is blocked in a hosts file, the browser will not try to fetch data again. The connection to the domain is mooted at the source. If anything, it will speed up browsing.
Clarification: there is no such a thing as a mvps hosts file. MVPS is just a site that gives instructions, there are other similar sites. You don't need to use MVPS installer. I usually copy the plain text file:
http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.txt
and add it to my host file. In Windows 7:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
Linux, Unix: /etc/hosts.0 -
as a footnote, I had nothing but problems after doing the hosts file thing. I suggest you try adblock plus maybe for ie.
I love ccleaner, nice n simple, monitoring simply means if theres a buildup of carp you can get rid of it will tell you.
try adwcleaner to clean down if you like.Friendly greeting!0 -
If a domain is blocked in a hosts file, the browser will not try to fetch data again. If anything, it will speed up browsing
if a webpage requests or tries to send properly formatted data from/to a third party website (tracking, adverts, whatever), and that request is redirected to a loopback or invalid address with a hosts file block and is therefore unavailable, the browser page load will stall or only partially complete until a timeout condition occurs. In IE this is visible with a waiting for response message at the bottom of the browser window. A similar thing happens on this very website when there is a problem with the 3rd party surreptitious tracking/analytics/social media connections.
Blocking adverts can also adversly affect page layout or the functionality of a website, and stop the back button (visible in the IE status window with a trying as to connect to 0.0.0.0 or 127.0.0.1 message) working under certain circumstances. The exact effect depends on the website coding, the browser, and the operating system.
It also stops things like 4od and the like working, as they try and contact an ad server before attempting to play content, the user is normally left with a blank video player screen and no indication that ad blocking is causing the site to fail.
Additionally, implementing the host file correctly is different on different operating systems, there is more to it than a copy and paste.Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0 -
I use Crapcleaner (allowing active monitoring)
Malwarebytes
Glary Utilites
Adware Cleaner0 -
I wanted to quote bsod but there seem to be tenchical problems.
@bsod: I don't know why IE behaves that way. On all other browsers I use and on all OS I use (Windows 7, Linux, Free- and Netbsd) I have noticed a massive speed up in browsing when I have hacked the hosts file.
Every now and again I have to babysit the file and punch holes in it. Sometimes I have to allow some yahoo ads domain to be able to get some yahoo services and I had to allow some Swagbucks subdomains to get free Swagbucks, apart from that I don't get any malware or spyware.
I haven't even updated Windows 7 since I have bought my last laptop, yet I have to get a single virus or malware.
The laptop came with Malwarebytes and I have uninstalled it.0 -

For Joe Blogs going about his bit of surfing and a few emails etc the proprietary solutions are more than adequate.
Baffling them further rarely moves them forward and usually has the effect of turning them off furthering their quest.
I don't hack about with host files and have never had a virus and I can't remember the last malware I had. So, it is not necessary to touch host files to avoid both.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you
