Ccleaner 'will monitor my computer'

My laptop has been so slow so I installed the freebie Ccleaner having seen it mentioned on a previous thread on here.

I installed it keeping the 'ticks' in the options suggested, didn't change anything. After the clean a pop up came up saying Ccleaner would monitor my computer and let me know when next to clean.

To what extent does 'monitor' mean. ....... is it safe for my internet banking etc.
I just bashed on and installed because I was in a mood with my laptop because it was slow, now I wish I had more info about Ccleaner to really understand what I've done. But then I don't understand computers, so I don't have confidence that I've done the right thing.

Must admit though that my laptop is now a speed machine :)

Should I also install malwarebytes even though the speed issue seems to be fixed. Oh, and I have AVG, I think my husband installed the version you pay for.

Thanks in advance for any advice

  • Instead of wasting time/money installing pointless anti-spyware/virus, just follow this guide:
    http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm

In one go this little trick will get rid of malware, speed up your PC and protect you from tracing cookies.

I use Windows 7 and I have had no malware, pop ups or spyware since I have used this guide.

I had to unblock a couple of domains because I am on Swagbucks and I use some tracing applications to make some money, otherwise my laptop is well protected.

Load of Tosh, it will not clean your teeth let alone your PC, however it will help you to avoid a lot of carp sites. Use Malwarebytes occasionally and keep an eye on whatever you download and reject the "would you like to install Ask toolbar/Macaffee piece of crap/speed up your PC for free" etc that some software comes with

You do not install a hosts file, you manipulate it by linking a site to a fictitious IP address, like 0.0.0.0.

    Bold statements here.

The OP was not about cleaning temp files, it was about speeding up a PC. Cleaning temp files won't speed up a PC, it will reclaim some hard drive space.

If you had bothered spending a couple of minutes reading the site, you wouldn't have come up with such silly statements.

we know about host files , yup they might help you getting crap , CC cleaner does things like clearing the cashe etc , your host file alone cannot do this.

PS: yes a hosts file list is great AFTER you have cleaned the crap out

right lads according to "ciaccino" we can all ditch cc cleane , malwarebytes and adaware coz this new magic file kills 99% of all known viruses and litter

So is it ok for Ccleaner to monitor my computer ? It's what it usually does then. It's not that I should have unticked/disabled something or other ..........

Yes if you wish , it is a relatively new function, but it and malwarebytes should normally be run as "on demand" i.e. when you want to run them(unless you have the Malwarebytes pro version). Everything "monitoring" your PC will slow it down in a relatively small/medium/large way.

Avg is a piece of junk, the paid for one is an even bigger piece of junk. Its bloatware, everything it does just grinds your computer down. Dump it, forget the cost you paid for it. Put it down to experience.

If you feel a burning desire to have paid for security software go for malwarebytes.

Just untick it and rest easy if you are worried. ..... Following from Piriform...
    Active Monitoring
Active Monitoring allows CCleaner Free to monitor your installation in the background, for any updates or new releases, so you don't have to worry about keeping up-to-date.
We recommend you keep this enabled, but if you'd prefer CCleaner didn't monitor your system, you can turn off Active Monitoring by following these steps:
    1. Open CCleaner, then click Options > Monitoring
    2. Disable System Monitoring by unchecking Enable System Monitoring
    3. Disable Active Monitoring by unchecking Enable Active Monitoring.
    4. Click Yes when the confirmation box appears
CCleaner will no longer appear in your system tray after closing.

For Info I have it unchecked........Hope all that helps.

Or you can open Ccleaner, go to tools/startup and disable monitoring.
