if not doing much mileage the 1.8 petrol might be worth a search goes like stink and if carefull can do over 40mpg.0 -
I gather from the fact that no one (other than veryoldbear) is saying go for the Saab, that everyone pretty much agrees it's a bad idea?

Yes pretty much . They don't make sab anymore although they do make a rather quality truck (Scania).BigDaddyGee wrote: »I gather from the fact that no one (other than veryoldbear) is saying go for the Saab, that everyone pretty much agrees it's a bad idea?
No main dealer for the diagnostics /engine management faults. Although I do believe when they run they are a quality motor.
What your looking for with your budget is going to be a bit of a gamble. You could get a really good car that suits you for a song . Then again you could get a right money pit.
Honest john is good for reviews from people who have owned and driven the cars.
Good luck. I still recon the kia Sedona or even the kia ceed are worth a look.just because you are paranoid doesnt mean to say they are not out to get you0 -
Skoda Octavia or Skoda Octavia.
High mileage with a proper service history.0 -
As already mentioned a Mondeo estate, I can fit more in it than my da can in his Connect van.
High mileage.. I only buy cars with over 120,000 miles now. But the service history must be spot on. Avoid any with missed services or gone over even by a small amount.
You want one thats serviced more often than the manufacturers max limit. With quality parts and not skimped on.
Just pushed my last to over 170,000 miles and its still going well with its new owner.
You and 1000's of others will be fighting over the few with less than 100k miles. Where the sensible money is the 120k mile cars with a perfect service record yet cheap because less people want a car with that many miles.
The over 100k miles and its ready for the scrapper still seems to live on in peoples minds.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
There are plenty of places that still fix Saabs and many of the service parts are common to the Vauxhall Vectra.0

I've had my 9-5 for 7 years, it's a W (2000) reg 2.3 petrol with 170000 miles (ish).
It's let me down once when the serpentine belt snapped & apart from regular maintenence it owes me nothing.
Don't get me wrong, it has a few niggly faults but for it's age & mileage I can cope.
One of the best cars I've ever owned.

Another vote for the Mondeo. You'd get a decent Mk3 at that price. No DPF (if it's a diesel), comfy, nice to drive, mahoosive loadspace, quickish, 45 mpg average, and mine's been reliable. Not the most involving car I have ever had, but I am fond of it for its sheer functionality. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0

2004 VW Passat 1.9tdi
Same engine thats in the Skoda Octavia, Audi A4 and Seat.
More room tho.0 -
A few tweaks soon spices them up a bit if thats your thing

I like the Mondeo because it does everything, Its big, Its good on fuel, Averaged 57mpg in mine on a day trip to the seaside loaded up.
almost 40mpg towing a caravan.
Its got plenty of room. Its cheap, No cambelt to worry about.
Find one thats had the clutch and DMF done and the aux belts and that important service history and you should be good for a few years.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
