Outer CV Joint replacement

Hi all..

I need to have my CV joint replaced on the drivers side - a mobile mechanic has quoted £130 for the work to be done tomorrow. Is this a reasonable cost or am I being ripped off..

My car is a Citroen C4 1.6 diesel.

Tony

Is the mobile mechanic recommended? If not, find one who is, don't put yourself in the frame for being his first guinea pig.
They have become almost regular service parts now and the factors price of a reconditioned, complete driveshaft hovers around the £40-50 mark now. Establish what you are getting for the money, he could be supplying anything from just a replacement CV and boot to a complete shaft. For the convenience of him coming to you and keeping your hands clean, it's not extortionate if he is using decent parts.

The mechanic is local to the area - and has been going many years - he actually lives in the street next to me so I know he cannot disappear if he does the job wrong. I see his van everyday.

I have lost faith with my usual garage so I an treading the water to see who can replace them...

Agree with Colino, £130 isn't over the top providing the Mechanic is supplying the parts and will replace the CV Joint, Rubber Boot and CV Joint grease as a minimum. Parts can be around the £50 mark and can take 1-2 hours to complete the job (unless every nut and bolt comes off nice and easily... which they almost never do!):D

I paid 120 or slightly less than that for a mondeo drive shaft and fitting a couple years ago. But couldn't comment on your car fully but the quote sounds neither good nor bad

He might be a mobile mechanic but he is charging garage rates.

If he comes highly recommended then that is the way to go, but the price isn't cheap at all.

    you are joking yes?
    a decent boot costs £8
to the OP the price is in line with doing a proper professional job and hes local ,use him and recommend him if happy, proper mobile mechanics still have bills apart from business premises rentals i really dont understand why people think they should work for a packet of polo mints

    what about fitting?

also remember when any mechanic fits a product they will cover the warranty parts & labour. what would this shaft cover if it fails and cheaper stuff tend to more often?

you never know the mobile mechanic might be fitting main dealer parts

No I'm not joking. I fitted similar to my Mondeo 40,000 + miles ago and had no problems. There must be a big plant in China knocking these out by the million to sell so cheap.

Well the work was done and completed to my satisfaction and the noise has gone - dropped the car off at my house and gave me a receipt without even asking.

I did call the AA technical line as well and they did say the cost was 'average'.

If needed I may use him again, but keeping my options open for a new garage/mechanic for the future, thanks everyone for their input, it is appreciated.
