Softstuff I needed to order a copy of mine a couple of years ago and that was, as nursemaggie says, just like an original, i.e. red and white (with the details in black though). It just had a recent date of issue on it.

I thought only death certs were black and white.

Still, if you ordered it from the GRO it must be right.

Is it worth the cost of ringing the GRO to set your mind at rest?

    Thanks for that Ivyleaf.
The thing is, having not seen it, it's a little hard to have that conversation IYSWIM? I've done a fair bit of googling, and it seems that past 1969, they look pretty black and white. Was yours pre or post 1969?

Yes ivyleaf It is only death certificates that are black and white. What does GRO stand for?

If you searched ind took something from the top 5 it probably is someone making a lot of money off you. I would have thought it was part of .gov

Remember I am not far away. There is a bus every 20 minutes to Preston. I am sure there will be a regular bus to Morecambe. I have not been there for about 40 years I think DD was about 3 1/2. Would not mind a day out there. I have a free bus pass so it won't even cost me. Being retired I have plenty of time.

GG softstuff DS was born in 1994 his birth certificate is red and white, with the details filled in by hand in black. It was his we needed when he was 12 because he needed a passport of his own. He went by himself to Morocco to Visit DD.

Aww, NurseMaggie you're lovely. The site was:
    https://www.gro.gov.uk/
GRO stands for general register office. I was sent there off gov.uk, so I'm pretty sure I ordered it from the right place.

Thank you for your offer. Frankly if it came to needing your help, you wouldn't need to travel at all, I could just get something sent to you and you could send it on. Hoping it doesn't come to that though, I reckon my solicitor will just say it's fine.

I've only posted a tiny bit of what's going on with my fathers estate NurseMaggie. If it carries on like this, I'll have a hell of a story to tell you and Floss next year, but we'll go to the pub instead of Marks and Spencers and I'll get the drinks in!!!

You get two bits from the GRO. The first is an A4 black and white piece of paper with details of your application on it. The second (and I can confirm this as my latest application re family history arrived 2 weeks ago) starts with the wording CERTIFIED COPY OF AN ENTRY OF BIRTH. The printing is red on a cream coloured background but the writing in the middle is indeed photocopied from the original registry entry. Birth certs are red printing, marriage ones are green and I haven't needed any death ones yet......
  • Soft - having done a lot of family history certificate ordering, I had a look at the website you mentioned. If you did indeed pay £9.25 it is the correct site. Most look-alike companies charge upwards of £25 for a certificate. Not having sight of the document, I can't be certain but I would say you've got the correct paperwork.

Thank you all. I'm pretty sure I'm all good. Will let you know for certain when the solicitor sees it at the end of the week.

It's very nice to have so many helpful friends to hand :o
