What they expect you to do when you don't have transport, the tip is miles away and public transport goes no where near I don't know. The lightbulbs I'm referring to are the compact fluorescents and they, and the strip fluro or curly fluro bulbs, are better recycled. I'm a mile away from the tip and swing by there on other business, but since one of these bulbs dies every 8-10 years, it's a minor problem. You could save them up and possibly get a lift to the relevent facility. I ride my pushbike to the tip with small stuff (or bigger stuff dismantled and taken in stages).
Dunno if this is countrywide, but I have seen a collection point for these bulbs amongst the recycling facilities on a Sainsbugs carpark, maybe there is one of those near you? HTH.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Hope you've all had a good day. The weather has been quite good here, I put the washing out about 9am and when I got home about 6pm it was just about dry, just needed airing off in the drier.
DD and I went to Edinburgh to meet my DN and her cousin (other side of family), they are staying with a friend for the weekend. We went for lunch (somewhere that probably wouldn't be posh enough for mother's day, but the burgers are amazing! I did my usual of having a burger without the bread! Also had sweet potato fries which were very tasty.
Hope you all have a good week ahead.0 -
I only have energy saving light bulbs. I don't think there anything in the car park at either Mrs S or Mr M. I don't know anyone who has a car so I am stuck if anything should need recycling. Other SM are well out of town with no public transport.
Like I said those of us who do not have cars are not catered for.0 -
The Sm my Dd works for sold £9,000 worth of flowers between Friday and Saturday and its in a very poor area. I do wish folk would use their imagination more and make something or buy something before the event for £1 or suchlike. I got Lilies with a rip in the packaging where Dd had ripped off the ys sticker as she knows I get a kick out of her buying reduced flowers :rotfl: I got her a frame in the shape of the word love and Dgs wrote Mum in a little heart that fitted in the centre of the O - it meant the world to her. His Daddy was poorly yesterday but got her ys flowers too.
Ds bought me Grandma's recipe journal probably about £1 or £1.99 and so pretty. He is buying a house and I wouldnt want him to use his precious savings.Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.

burtha what a sensible gift for your MIL.
My DDs MIL always gets me something similar for Christmas. Last year I had a shoe box covered in Christmas paper and containing lots of small tins of things and small pots of jam, marmalade and lemom curd. When you live alone often it takes ages to get through some bigger tins or jars.
I bag the scarlet bit of the fence as bright red is my favourite colour.I love bright colours anyway, and when winter comes on, the shops all seem to have very drab colours in clothes.Which I think is sad as bright colours brighten up the world around you.I am definitely not a 'beige lady'
I have a potted hydranga given to me yesterday by my DD as one of my Mums day presents and I am hoping once the weather warms up my gardener will be able to pot it up in the garden for me.At the moment its in the conservatory on the window ledge and is very pretty.
Orthodontist with DGS Henry this morning, last night I helped him construct a cardboard bird box for school. The school said to be inovative so we made it look like a small t.v. set with bars where the screen would be:):) I think we both enjoyed the cutting and designing of it.I seem to do more with my DGC for school than I ever had time to do with my own
:):) I am always Henry's first port of call for glue, paper cardboard and scissors
:):)
His big brother Ben comes home from Uni this Saturday so we are all looking forward to that.
Right, time to get off the fence and get a wriggle on
Have a good day chums what evfer you are doing
HM carrot , coriander,& lentil soup for lunch today

Morning all,
I try my best to be creative with little gifts. We don't have much to spend on the extravagant, and it isn't as if there is much we could offer most of our family members anyway that would be useful to them. I guess my two most inspired gifts over the past few years have been a packet of seeds for creeping thyme for my dad who wanted to plant it in the lawn. He couldn't find it in Germany so I found some that were cleared for export and gave them to him. For mum it was a little tray cloth with her favourite flowers embroidered on it, found in the CS. She likes old linens and does a lot of needlework herself, but her favourite flower isn't often depicted that way. Both cost me well under £5. Unfortunately I'm not always so successful at finding just the right thing at just the right time. I love your paper roses idea, Burtha, as well as the mini pots JackieO. My mum likes to have a tea in the spring for her pupils so sometimes I'll get her a few little things for that. I've sent lemon curd before, perhaps once I get round to my little bottling experiment I can send some homemade preserves.
A few work related things to do this morning, one I'm not sure how long it will take. If I finish early enough I may pop into town to make the most of my bus fare. Would like to visit the haberdashery and fabric store. I'd like to make myself a couple of dresses soon. I normally go to the gym on a Monday, but depending on how today pans out I may go tomorrow morning instead. Courgette lasagne for tea with a slice of banana bread for pudding.
I didn't make my sour dough starter yesterday as I found most of the recipes suggested bottled water, and all of mine has been 're-bottled from the tap.' I'll pick up a bottle today to use for feeding the starter. It seems the problem is the chlorine, which makes me think that in future I could just run a jug of it and leave it to sit overnight, but I'm not sure. I'm also not sure if the chlorine dissipates if the water is stored in a sealed bottle. Any more experienced views?
I hope all of you are well, hugs to all.x0 -
Can I please have a nice soft blue section with a shelf for my coffee and anything coffee flavoured, sorry GreyQueen! I am not a Mum but pride of place in my front window is an Amayrllis bought for 50p in January. Love the thought of paper roses Burtha. Well done Miss Stilty. Thinking of you Lyn. x0

To my surprise DS did realise it was Mother's Day. He rushed out at 4.30 and came back with a lovely bunch of flowers and a Green & Black's Tasting Selection
I said daffodils would have been lovely (and cheaper) but he said they were all in bud and he wanted me to have actual flowers. He was quite surprised when I explained the buds would open after they were brought into the warmth of the house!
Re the lightbulbs, I've checked with the recycling leaflet/diary from our council and it doesn't look as if they have any special facilities for recycling them yet. There's a long list of odd things they do recycle, but lightbulbs aren't included as yet. And, like Maggie's, our tip is miles away in the middle of nowhere and if there is public transport out there I wouldn't have a clue which bus to get. We go there in the car, but it involves a big and busy roundabout and a busy dual carriageway full of big trucks, so I've never seen a cyclist out that way either!
I did notice the last time I was in there that our nearest Tosco's accepts water filter cartridges for recycling, so I'm saving those now and have a couple to take with us next time.0 -

I've had successful sour dough starter with tap water a few times. I'd never heard tap water could be troublesome... or maybe I saw it and just decided to ignore it :rotfl: . In any case, chlorine dissipates really quickly if you put tap water in a jug and just stir it for 20 secs, if it worries you.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070
