silvasaver you are right about the child benefit. Nothing for the first child, and when DD2 was born in 1972 I received 90p a week for her. DD1 went to a playgroup twice a week and that cost 70p,

I could never understand why it wasn't paid for the first child because it was then that you needed it, and then it could be passed on to the second child.

You were expected to save up for the first one but they recognised that you would be down to one wage by the time the second one came along
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Candlelight the 1st child had a tax allowance given to the father. Our son was born 3 weeks early at the end of March and we got a lovely tax rebate for the whole year backdated .It was changed soon after this and became part of the family allowance paid to the mother.

Back from NYC. We both had a great time and resolved to do a trip each year now. Old friends are priceless.

We were really good and did a lot of walking. Mind you it was about the only moneysavings thing we did. But we did do old school as we went to the Waldorf Astoria for breakfast, the Russian Tea Room for high tea and visited Macy's, Saks, Bloomingdales and Bergdorfs.

The weather there was great and even better when we got home.

My cucumbers have sprouted! Fingers crossed for a crop.

    Anybody seen Fuddle post lately?

Sounds like a wonderful trip to NYC wondercollie...building memories.

nursemaggie I hope you feel well soon, if its nothing specific but niggly I am glad its nothing that requires more than rest and TLC.

I managed to sleep until a few minutes ago and if I woke in the night, managed to turn over and get back off to sleep. My recent insomnia/panic attacks in the night are seemingly quite common after talking to some of the people at the bingo yesterday.

It seems most if they feel that way..."Get up!" even if in the middle of the night. Usually they try and do something but in the middle of the night, that's not easy. As far as I can see it often involves having a cup of tea and switching the TV on and getting interested in a TV programme or a film.

But if you are not signed up to Sky or something similar many overnight TV channels that remain on air often turn into shopping channels or its news which is depressing enough as it is.

I may stay up myself now but I have felt worse so any improvement is a good sign. I have to be out by 10.30am as I am keeping my friend company as his Father has to go into a big hospital in Newcastle for a very big op(and age and health is against him)and his wife has to accompany him. My friend has to have someone around now to see he is OK.

Its kind of ironic as I feel as I do that I am seeing that he is OK and I'm only 5 years younger than he is:pbut its what we do, we care for others and think less of ourselves.

His Mum has ordered a delivery of fish and chips for everyone before she leaves as it may be the last big meal for everyone and it means everyone is fed for the day and no one will go hungry. And she doesn't have to do the cooking. So I'll skip breakfast and think of the Fish and chips as a breakfast and dinner combined as we'll be having that around 11am.

The weather doesn't look too bad either, not that I'm going anywhere. Tonight hopefully we'll go onto the Music Club and meet his Mum there if she doesn't get back home first so we go in together. I missed it last week and though its always good a few performers I haven't seen in a while turned up.

So glad you had a good time Wondercollie, I was in NYC last October for the second time and enjoyed it as much as the first, if not more. I think it feels a lot safer now than when I went in 2001.

Enjoy your fish and chips Pops, something I haven't had for a while.

    Morning all,

Sorry to hear you're not feeling quite yourself Nursemaggie.

Wondercollie it sounds like a great trip. I think Fuddle is popping into the Make do and Mend thread a bit more often now. It looks like a great thread, keep meaning to pop in a bit more myself.

Pops, sorry you had another difficult night, but your fish and chips sound great. Not sure the telly is always brilliant for sleepless nights, the light from televisions and computer and phone screens can make it more difficult to sleep.

Right, back to work for me. I hope all are well today.x

Morning everyone, please may I join you?

The last few months have been horrendously frantic for lots of reasons, but I need to return to the fold, so to speak. I'll try and read back a bit, to see what I've missed!

    A xo

Pops why not try "Up All Night" on radio 5 live. Although radio 5 live is news and sport based they have a lot of cultural based things during the night. They even have a phone in on insomnia now and again.
