San Fran - LA - Highway 1 Accomadation

Hi

I'm looking for any recommendations or advice for an overnight stop somewhere between San Fransisco & Los Angeles (or even 2 stops or 2 nights in one stopover etc).

Wont be leaving SFO until midday and traveling in August.

Budget is about £120-50 per night.

I cant decide. Distance between SFO - Monterey Bay seems too short and SFO - Morro Bay too long. Everything in between seems to be a bit ramshackle cabin type with naff reviews.

No kids traveling just me & the wife. Thnaks

You're right, there's hardly any accommodation between Monterey and Morro Bay - only plenty of wonderful scenic views and state parks.

Near Morro Bay there's also Pismo Beach (good for families with children), Cambria (upmarket, "chic") and San Luis Obispo (a bit bigger town and a good budget choice).

You might like to try a search within Google Maps for:
    motel near monterey
    motel near morro bay
    etc.
The rates listed in the margin give you some idea of comparative prices but actual rates will depend on your dates.

We stayed in Monterey bay (one of my favourite places in the world) and we're glad of it - the jet lag was horrendous

The aquarium there is awesome too.

If your schedule allows, definitely consider 2 stops over 2 nights. It will allow you far more time to enjoy the fantastic scenery along route 1 and make stop offs in places along the way.

I actually stopped at Monterey and Morro Bay doing that journey. Your budget will allow for a decent standard of accommodation.

I'm not sure it's in your budget, but we stayed here on our honeymoon road trip. It was ideal driving time from San Francisco, and just lovely. We ate at Clint Eastwoods ranch in Carmel

We are really fond of Avila Beach as well, just a few miles from SLO.

I could very happily spend a week going from SFO to LA. Which would be even better if it meant that I had no time in LA !

We did Santa Cruz to Ventura Beach. A tad too long.

I'd go with stops at Monterey (see the Aquarium, Seventeen Mile Drive, Carmel) and then an early start to Morro Bay if I did the trip again. And make longer stops during the day on the H1 drive.

    It's fabulous.

Plan for more stops than you think - whilst the trip is only 500 miles, Highway 1 isn't all that quick, and you'll want to stop to take pictures / have a look around /eat.

We were only managing 120 miles a day, but that was 5ish hours on the road by the time we farted about. We stopped at Carmel, Morro Bay, Santa Barbara, and Oxnard.

If you're not leaving until midday I'd go for Carmel the first night, and maybe push on to Santa Barbara the second (although that's a fair trek as it includes the beautiful but windy and slow bit of Highway 1).

Not sure how busy it is in August, but we just pitched up and asked for rooms when we got there. Plenty of choice for your budget.

We stopped on the edge of Monterey Bay in a nice little B&b we ended up doing 2 nights there which gave us a full day to explore and we ate at one of the many fish restaurants which sit out over the water. I agree that it's a lovely scenic route to LA And is definately worth taking your time over the trip.
