Sending A Laptop......

My laptop will hopefully be sold by Sunday.

A bit of a thick question. It has it's own box. When I post it, do I just send the box or do I wrap it up? If I put the box in a box, where would I get such a big box from? Has anyone else sold one and how did they send it?

Also, what would be the cheapest option to send it if it sells for £50? And what would be the cheapest option to send if it sells for £100?

Thanks in advance.

Assuming this is an eBay sale you need to send it by whatever method you stated in your listings.

Most couriers will not insure laptops, so if you do use a courier be mindful that you need to bi be proof it against damage. A double box and wrapping would be essential. Special delivery via RM would cover you but is expensive.

Have a look at the sticky thread on postage

It depends on the weight of the laptop, if it's under 1kg RM would probably be the most cost effective.

I recently sold a tablet with box and accessories and bundled them all together, wrapped them in bubble wrap, wrapped it again in some clear plastic I had and then wrapped in thick kraft paper. Wish I had an extra box but the package ended up an awkward size.

If you have another box you can fit it in then I'd bubble wrap and put it in that. Otherwise, just wrap it as securely as you can. Don't underwrap!

Also you should post using the method you've listed at minimum. I wouldn't post it with anything less than RM Signed For, possibly even Special Delivery. You have to weigh up the chance it breaks in the post and what that would cost you, with the cost of the insurance when posting.

Thanks guys. I appreciate your advice especially Racheya.

I did put Royal Mail standard but I won't risk it if bids keep going up. I would rather pay more and make sure it gets there safely.

    Thanks again.

Do have a read of the sticky postage thread.

Standard RM will not be tracked and so you would automatically lose any INR claim and not be able to reclaim more than £20 from RM. If you have stated standard postage on your auction then you may make yourself a target for a scammer.

Signed for insures up to £50 but is not tracked . I'm not sure that RM would even insure a laptop unless it went special delivery.

What postage method have you stated in your listing, and how much have you stated for Postage?

  • Just double box it and stick in with Royal Mail. Should be fine :)

When I sell a laptp with it's original box and packaging, I just pack it as the maker did, pop the box in a post bag and send via Collect+ or Parcel2go.
    They are both tracked.

Never had one delivered damaged yet.

Wrap it up in towels, make sure it does not scramble back and forth in the package.

The problems with towels is that they are heavy and could push the price of the courier up even morel

Ensure when the item is in the retail box it isn't moving, if it can move around it will break.

When you've secured it add additional protection around the box, perhaps a few layers of bubble wrap and another box (or a cardboard box flattened and wrapped around to fit).
