Why are tickets one way so expensive?
My daughter is marrying an American and so has a visa for entry and needs only a ticket one way.
£1200 to Chicago single
or £450 return. So just buy a return and not bother using it?
The handy thing is, the return date can be the cheapest flight date making the return even cheaper....

Yes: she can throw away the return half of her ticket.
One-way tickets are generally flexible, and you pay top dollar for flexibility. Cheap tickets, valid only on a particular flight and non-refundable, are generally only offered for return journeys.0 -
It's technically against the T&C's do to what you're suggesting. However in practice you'll have no problem. As long as you don't contact the airline and advise them you won't be using the return. Just "miss" the return leg.0

Check out Aer Lingus and Air Berlin, they offer relatively cheap one-way fares0

One way can be a good use of Avios0

Also, make sure its the return leg you arent going to be using. If you do what another poster did recently and book it so that you are only using the return leg and not the outbound one you'll find the return is cancelled after you are a no show for the outbound.0

good shout and also don't call them up to ask for a refund/tax refund on the portion that is not going to be used...they may be very obliging to reprice the ticket as a one-way and charge you the £750 extra!0 -
