Car Tax rant

Adrianc - check out BBC petrol price cost calculator. A 40 litre tank at £1.08 p/litre in UK would cost £43.20, in Venezuela it costs £42.61 less (or less than 2p/litre)

Yes, the Venezuelan government massively subsidises fuel prices. And...? You think that would help the UK government's finances? How would you suggest the cost of switching from fuel being a contributor to being heavily subsidised be covered?0

Adrian, think you missed my point. I was suggesting that the significant increase in fuel prices to cover getting rid of road tax would be unbearable for me, and I could get round it by moving to Venezuela where fuel is nearly as cheap as water. I wasn't suggesting fuel should be subsidised in this country to any extent, suppose my sense of humour sounds better in my head than when read by someone else.0

How it was explained to me, by the really helpful guy, was that if you send the V5c back to them, and it gets to them a few days after the start of another month, you lose that months tax too (so you lose February AND March). So irrespective of whether you sell the car at the end of the month, the DVLA will only issue refunds upon receipt of the V5c. The only way to do it is to SORN the old car online before month end, as their computers will be updated straight away.
If this is the case this makes the whole process even more of a con? So what they are saying is that If I sell my vehicle on the last day of the month I am likely to lose the next months refund because they don't receive the V5c until the some date in that month. Really!!!!!! So effectively for every private sale of a vehicle the government gain at least one months Road Tax, if the vehicle is sold mid month they could gain two months and if the timing is really bad they could gain the best part of three months.0 -
The effective date is still the same as it's always been for a refund - the date the application is dated/posted, not the date it's processed.0

What I can't understand here is why they have elected not to allow the passing on of the remaining Road Tax?0

Because there's no tax disc, therefore no assurance that when someone tells you your new car is taxed that it actually is.0 -
Not that the tax disc ever was, because you could always apply for a refund claiming it was lost...Cornucopia wrote: »Because there's no tax disc, therefore no assurance that when someone tells you your new car is taxed that it actually is.0 -
