We are with Eon economy 10 & are currently looking at switching to economy 7 to save money but have been baffled by comparison websites , Eon today quoted £64 to change meters. But am still in quantry trying to compare to see if this would be the right move or not. We are all electric storage heaters & Emerson on the newer 2 period meter. We used a total of 15,867kwh last year, of which 5,703 were day rate @ 16.9p/kWh & 10,164kwh were night rate @ 8.6p/kWh with standing charge of 16.4p/day. Total of £1911.00 for the year. Would appreciate any advise please, going round in circles at the moment !! Lol. Many thanks. P.s we have the new Dimplex Quantum storage heaters fitted earlier this year which they say are more efficient & only need 7 hours , so they say that is !!

    Hi Benhoss

  • Thanks for that Cardew, very interesting. Just a bit concerned about comments about wiring changes to go to economy 7 as well as meter change. Can't understand why the economy 10 tariffs are so limited & no compitition . Surely country wide there must be demand.

The charges for E10 are frankly a disgrace. As said in my earlier post you would save nearly £300pa by going on a single rate(24/7) tariff and £600pa on the cheapest E7 tariff.

Most properties on E7 these days have all electricity(i.e to sockets electric showers, cookers etc) wired to use off-peak rates during the 7 hours. This means you can use appliances on a timer to take advantage of those rates

Your storage heaters and immersion heater will be on a separate timer/circuit and you need to get the wiring modified.

    Hi Ben

Situations differ but I find it's best to ask a qualified electrician to take a look at the set up before changing the meter type. Might be there's nothing needed but, as Cardew says, storage/water immersion heaters will be on separate circuits and there may be a need to re-wire. Best to be safe.

If you decide to go ahead with the appointment on 4 December 15 you mention in another thread, would be useful to have your electrician on site at the same time. Sort it all in one go.

That's a big saving Cardew, we are north Essex near Stansted airport would be nice to find out the exact switching times for Eco 10 & 7 as well. Sorry for the late reply Ben. Not been in the office since last Thursday. I'll be happy to let you have the switching times for your Economy 10 meter. Please drop an email to the address in my Profile with your details. I'll tell you the times and give you as much information about your set up as possible. Also, if you would like me to bring everything up to date, include the meter readings as well. I'll do a belt and braces job for you.

Sorry again for the late reply Ben and look forward to hearing from you.
