DVLA Car Tax fine for Band A Car

Hi,
Im new to the forum's here so please bear with me. I've tried to google for some advice but cant find any relevant help.
I moved house last year and forgot to update the address on my Vehicle Registration Document. My car tax then ran out - and because of the change in law not requiring car tax to be displayed teamed with not getting the reminder because it would have gone to the wrong address it was some time before i realised - more than 3 months.
My car is a band A car - requiring zero tax to be paid on it. When i did remember i changed my address and got the car 'taxed' straight away.
I have now received a credit chasing letter from Advantis chasing me for an £80 fine for failing to tax my car.
Can anyone tell me if i have any form of defence here or if its just a lesson learnt and i have to pay? its just frustrating to be paying an £80 fine when the car tax amount was Zero in the first place.
Any advice greatly appreciated
Thanks

No defence. I suggest you make sure you have your new address on your DL otherwise you could land another fine.Current MFD 1st July 2026
Target MFD 1st April 20230 -

It's a fine for you failing to renew the VED, there is no link to the actual price paid for the VED and the fine amount.====0 -
so you don't have to pay back dated tax but you do pay the fine for not taxing your vehicle you incurred the fine through your own fault of not changing the address and forgetting to tax it, they did their job in notifying you at your v5c address your fault you didn't send the v5c off.
I don't need a tax disc to remind me that my tax is up its stuck in my head that November I need to tax my car and I keep my documents in order so If I do have a lapse in memory then I have that reminder as a back up.
you owe the fine.0 -

I'd put it as lesson learnt.
Look at it in another way, in the days when there were VED discs, they still had to be displayed.
So the process of ensuring your vehicle has valid VED still stands, it doesn't matter that it cost £0 or £500, by not renewing you have not ensured you have VED.0 -
thanks for your replies.
Im getting the general jist!
Unfortunatly the change of address came about because of upsetting reasons that i wont explain on here - hence the car reg not being at the top of my list, memory or not.
Ill get onto sorting it out
Thanks again0 -
TOP TIP!
set a calendar date reminder in your phone to remind you 14 days before your MOT and tax expire, that way your phone should sound an alarm and remind you.
As with moving you have to register for council tax to be changed in your name to that address, the car sitting outside is consistent reminder of your obligations as a keeper I see no excuse to forget about.
I moved 12 years ago under something that I no longer want to re experience, the house documents and cars documents were the first to be changed.0 -
thankyou for your advice
with due respect, i wasnt looking for a reason to excuse me forgetting - i was just asking iff there was anything i could do - other whether it was lesson learned
Was happy to pay.0 -
I'd be tempted to tell the debc collectoer to sod off and pay the fine direct to DVLA0

I have a fine from the DVLA for not paying £0.00 tax.
I bought the car on 6th Oct 2014 and had a letter from the previous owner saying that they had 'taxed' the car. I know I did not need a tax disc but clearly did not read the changes properly and realise as the new owner I was required to pay no tax again.
How can I be fined for not paying tax when I did not owe any?
I've contested it but they still want their fine. I am tempted to go to court but know that it is stupid so will pay the fine but am seething inside!0 -
Then go to court and explain the situation. The DVLA probably won't even bother taking the case to court. It's worth the risk...in my opinion.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.
