They paid out because the onus is on the person reversing, it doesnt matter what speed the other driver was going. I was told this when it happened to me. I was actually leaving the space forwards and the other driver reversed into me. She told the insurers I was the one reversing! There were no witness so was a knock for knock thankfully.
I just got a quote for myself from Quinn Direct of £1900 third party to add my newly qualified son as a named driver. Its a dirt cheap car so if he has a prang we'll just write it off. I just wanted legal cover, not interested in all the bells and whistles
Firstly reversing etc is not the case. it is the driver who was being more careless and not paying attention. Who drove like a amuture and who drove like a pro?
Also the £1900 quote may seen cheap, but ask when the legal cover will work for you. I have asked my insurance in the past and it only worked for me when it was the other persons fault.

All "legal cover" associated with car insurance (which is really just uninsured loss recovery) will only act for you if they believe that there is a reasonable chance you will win, and that the third party has the means to pay up.
