hi. just read your thread as i've just been ripped off by quinn! how did yours turn out? yes a very cheap £2,100 for a provisional fully comp in my name at 17 years old but now i've passed they want an extra £4,200!! so i've cancelled! they missold me this policy and i wish i'da put negative things in google to see what shysters they are. they never told me it would go up. not worth passing my test!
I was on my dad's policy from Liverpool Victoria as a learner. Cost £700 comprehensive (I was 17). When I passed my test, they wanted about £16. Bargain price and quality service.0 -
Exactly the same here. My son's provisional insurance was £1372 now they want over £2000. I have spoken to a manager and am now writing to Cullum Morgan head of customer services.
They are crooks and their insurance is a scam. They know perfectly well that when a youngster takes out insurance with them on a provisional then they are trying to pass their test and get a full licence. They make no atttempt to warn that the premium will go up. Strange thing is 5 of his friends had this increase waivered when their parents rang up to say their son had now passed................
They won't do this for me and said I was making it up!!!!!!!!!!
How can we put these b****ards out of business?0 -
This is ridiculous. A driver is most at risk of having an accident immediately after passing his full test. The risk substantially increases in the months and couple of years after passing the driving test, as this is when the driver will start driving (a) unsupervised, (b) at night, and (c) quite possibly with a car full of other youngsters egging him or her on.
You are essentially complaining that the insurer did not mother you. They agreed to cover the driver on the basis of the facts at inception. Why should they waive the increase? If you don't like the increase you should cancel the policy and take up a quote elsewhere.0 -
Mr tru has insured (third party, fire and theft) a 1997 Corsa with master tru as a named driver on a provisional licence. It cost £595.12, it would've been cheaper if mr tru could've used his no-claims bonus but because he's insured as part of a fleet and not individually, it doesn't count. All other insurance companies wanted over £1300. When he passes his test it'll jump to around £1600. Then it'll jump again when miss tru gets her provisional.
Not sure what my point is reallyexcept that everything was explained to us when we took the cover.

it's been a year since i've been on this site but there is a website called tiger.co.uk and they are specifically for under 21 years old drivers. my son now insured with direct line and it was brill! excess a bit hefty but if it brings the price down then i'm ok with that. only trouble is you have to do it all on line and sometimes it just nice speaking to a voice because not everything on forms is a yes or no answer. so far so good and i just hope that no one else has been ripped off by quinn!:T0 -
Here's the inside track on Quinn - I have two personal experiences of them - both bad. One from my policy another from my partner's son. Mine first - I insured a little runaround I'd bought for my son to learn to drive, foolishly using my own name as policy holder and him as a named driver. We had the mildest of bumps with an old BMW driven by an Eastern European who made such as fuss about the incident that my partner filmed both him and the damage on her blackberry. We spoke to Quinn and told them that there was virtually no damage and we were suspicious of the circumstances. We heard no more and assumed they had rejected any claim. When the renewal came they were asking for £2400 to insure a £200 car and told me I'd lost my no claims bonus. Turns out they had paid £1500 to repair a 15 year old BMW (which was worth about £800) without any sort of evidence or investigation - and to add insult had paid for car hire. I now have no NCD and no car as a result. My partner's son had a similar experience. He was reversing out of a parking space when another car hit him. He didn't accept liability but Quinn paid out for repairs and whiplash - for a crash that happened in a car park with a 5mph limit. If the other driver had whiplash they must have been speeding and were therefore liable. Quinn made no attempt to fight or dispute liability they just paid out and tried to pass the cost on. Avoid like the plague. I'm still dealing with the ombudsman on this. If anyone else has similar stories I'd like to hear from them.0

Did you tell Quinn that your son was the main user of the car?0
-
He wasn't - he was learning and used it occasionally for practice.0

Well presumably you must have had some bonus to use on the car or else you wouldn't have lost it? Although you say your son was an occasional driver, you originally said you had bought a car for your son to learn to drive - what was going to happen when he passed his test - were you going to sell it or was he going to be the main user of it? Alternatively did you downgrade your original car to a smaller one - sorry your post is a bit unclear - did you disclose to Quinn that your son was going to be a driver on the policy?
It appears that they may have rated the insurance on the youngest driver (which is how most insurers will rate vehicles to ensure that they are getting the correct premium for the risk). It will also include a rating for him having an accident. As for the cost of the premium it is not really hugely relevant as to how much the vehicle is worth, because the main exposure is the cost of injury claims to third parties. However from some of the posts on here £2,400 for a young male driver, particularly with an accident, is not hugely expensive.
As far as I can see they have dealt with the third party claim in the usual manner - insurers will have looked at what you said on your claim form and assessed the cost of the third party claim and paid it if it appeared reasonable. I am not aware that they would normally go back to the insured unless there was clear evidence of fraud although others may have a different view.
Same as your partners son - he was reversing out of a space into the traffic lane. I know it was a car park, but he should still have ensured that the roadway was clear before proceeding.0 -
My partner's son had a similar experience. He was reversing out of a parking space when another car hit him. He didn't accept liability but Quinn paid out for repairs and whiplash - for a crash that happened in a car park with a 5mph limit. They paid out because the onus is on the person reversing, it doesnt matter what speed the other driver was going. I was told this when it happened to me. I was actually leaving the space forwards and the other driver reversed into me. She told the insurers I was the one reversing! There were no witness so was a knock for knock thankfully.
I just got a quote for myself from Quinn Direct of £1900 third party to add my newly qualified son as a named driver. Its a dirt cheap car so if he has a prang we'll just write it off. I just wanted legal cover, not interested in all the bells and whistles0
