Car is up for mot/service soon.

I was thinking of using mot angel plan with the pass guarantee (£297!!).

Car feels a little weird so i''m anticipating some repairs!

Anybody used this service before??

Cheers

Have you read the T&C's? Limits for individual items are fairly low You don't know how much they will charge to remedy these.
Do they cover existing faults or do you have to take it out with a certain number of months MOT left?
I have never heard of this before.

There is no address for the business on their website which is against trading laws and if anything goes wrong means it's very difficult for you to take any action.

It does not even give the companies trading name.

These types of plan tend to only be taken out by people who will need to claim so the prices are high to reflect this

Any company who shout about how they save their customers money by replacing brake discs but not pads is deeply suspect.

  • A total nightmare.
My recent experience left me in despair.
The service booked and paid for was the pass guarantee and collection/delivery service.
I should have smelt a rat when I booked the MOT in at a local garage through Motangel a week in advance. They called the day before to say that they could not collect the car and it would have to be rebooked a week later and the nearest garage was over an hour away. They insisted on it being a Halfords garage.
When I checked directly, Halfords offer the same service for less than Motangel.
When the vehicle was eventually taken to the garage it failed its MOT on a couple of points, rear brakes and push rod wear. One advisory was also stated, slight play in the steering rack. Given the cost, I asked them to go ahead with the two failure points which they did for a cost. The following day I was expecting the vehicle back. It did not arrive. I had to call Motangel. I was told that having looked at it again they had decided that the steering rack was actually an MOT failure but had decided not to tell me. They then went on to tell me that the cost of the repairs was so high I decided not to proceed, it was something I could do more cheaply locally, and it was agreed that the vehicle would be dropped back the next day, Friday. Friday came and went and it did not arrive. When I got back from work it was not there and it was too late to call Motangel. The vehicle did not turn up all weekend and I called on Monday, I was told that they would not deliver it back as it did not have an MOT. This meant that I would either have to wait another week so I could arrange collection over the following weekend or, pay for the work to be done.

Basically, I was trapped into paying over the odds for work I could have done more cheaply at home and by someone I would trust.

This experience has taught me that you are much better off getting your MOT done locally by someone you trust because, once your vehicle has been taken by Motangel and passed on to a third party garage you have no control over what work is carried out and you are advised by people who do not understand the issue, they are simply reading off a screen. You either do what they say or you don't get your car back unless you pay for collection.

Other than the lack of trust, the customer service and communication was truly terrible. I was given misleading information and on one occasion, deliberately ignored at the end of Friday afternoon. I asked for more information on a number of occasions and was mislead - for example on the work that was needed, the time it would take, the cost and the service provided.

All in all, it is not the poor service that concerns me the most it is the fact that you can be held to ransom once they have your vehicle, you have no choice but to do what they say. Please read this and I urge you not to use Motangel.

Basically, avoid at all costs. As MSE has suggested, find a good local garage.

that's a lot of (pointless) advisories, do you do work on cars as well, or are you an MOT only garage

Why are they pointless?, they refer mainly to testable items that have deteriorated and may require attention before the next scheduled garage visit. Some of them are there to show that some testable items could not be examined, others are there to show that they have been seen and the correct test standards have been applied.

What difference does it make if we carry out repairs?, for your information this car came from another garage who would do the repairs, so it makes absolutely no difference to my employers business as to whether it passes or not, in fact it would have been better for us if it was a straight pass as it would have been a quicker test.

As it never came back for retest, that's one less unroadworthy car that we have to share our roads with.
