A pair of powerline adapters will give you internet downstairs/in another room and allow you to leave the router upstairs, and are reasonably priced.
Any reason you ned to move the router downstairs?

Shorter distances do make WiFi performance better.

Ethernet is the same speed up to 100m. Above that it is likely to start hitting errors but for most home setups that is pretty acedemic.

The router should be as near the master socket as possible, telephone extension leads are a no-no and will reduce your line speed. Get the signal from there to where you need it using ethernet, wi-fi or Homeplugs.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
