How much to offer dealer

The other thing, related to the "It's only business" idea is that the car will almost definitely still be there tomorrow. Two weeks later, the 3 cars I was also looking are still there (just checked AutoTrader). One is reduced by £200. And if it sells in the meantime, it's not as if there aren't dozens of others.

If you walk out, doesn't mean you won't buy it eventually, just means you think you can get a better deal elsewhere and you need to do more research r look at some others. I also think once you have taken it for a test-drive and know you'd take it for £?,??? You can always call back later to say you have looked at a few and if they are willing to sell it for that price, you'll come in and buy it. There's this idea they can't give you a simple Yes/No but of course they can.

Great advice, thanks for taking the time to reply the car has been around for 3 weeks so will see if they will negotiate.
If not then others will come up, not desperate so prepared to walk away

20% off makes it 14000. IMHO that is way low. I suspect it will get thrown out without consideration. Problem with low ball offers is it stops you being taken seriously.

its a Golf. They are common. Common because they have a good German reputation and peeps aspire to own one. Therefore unless it's a weird colour or unusual spec, the car will sell. If not to you the someone else

well car has been around for a few weeks, and want to start low so there is room to go up, if I go straight in at 10% then less chance to negotiate. But if I can get about 10% off i'd be chuffed

The good German reputation is VW living off past plaudits. They are the same as any other mass manufacturer. But with a poor attitude.
CEED or Hyundai I30 would be very good alternatives.

The dealer probably doesn't have 20% profit in that car as Golfs hold their value well and the typical VW owner expects good residuals.

If you were selling your house for £175000 and somebody offered around £145000 what would you do

    DrivetheDeal offer a new 1.4tsi S DSG 5dr for just under £18k.

    They don't list an SE.

You could use that as a bargaining chip.

But I would suspect you would be lucky to get more than £800 or so off.

Also use Car Supermarket prices as a bargaining tool.

CarGiant has a Golf Match 1.4tsi dsg up for £11k on a 13plate. With 37k miles.

A car that is still under new car warranty is a safe bet.

I wouldn't pay main dealer premium as the dealer will have to fix it anyway.

I think the SE is an obsolete model now replaced with the Match at least it is for the 150 bhp diesel

I've recently looked at a new VW, the price seemed a little high, then I found out why, they'd added about £500 for car park dent repairs, £250 for puncture repairs and £450 for gap insurance!!

The salesman even looked as so I should be pleased with the price!!

that's a but crafty adding the extras on, so realistically if I asked what was included I could say no I don't them and get the price reduced?

Yes, i'm sure they would have removed these extras without any problems, doubtful once they'd reduced there price by so much they would have actually reduced the real price at all and no doubt would have tried to add on the paint protection and god knows what else afterwards as well.
