paying more due to non delivery

Hi all

I was supposed to get a grocery delivery but Tesco failed to deliver it within their allotted time and in fact as I sit here two days later I am still waiting. Having phoned their help desk they have informed me that my shopping will cost more as deals that were on on Thursday are no longer valid.

Am I entitled to demand that I pay the same as I would have done on Thursday? I may be wrong but I don't see why I should pay more for exactly the same stuff that Tesco failed to deliver.

Thanks

Chris

It states that its a guide price online and you are charged the price on the day of delivery so you cannot demand that you pay the same.

The items have to go through the till so the price cannot be changed.

They should of offered you a discount code though as a gesture of goodwill for delivery failure.

Did they state why it wasn't delivered? If it was something out of there control then its fair enough and it happens.

No. But you're entitled to make a Strongly Worded Complaint to Tesco central command. I bl... blinkin would. With any luck you'll get an apology and a gift card.

You say that the price CANNOT be changed. The price charged at the till CAN be changed into anything that the till operator or a supervisor wants to change it to.

Thing is; they have not gone through the "till"- nothing actually goes through (ie is taken from the account) until the items have been delivered.

(However for reference to those making an order- charges can sometimes be "earmarked" by the bank to the company before actually being taken to ensure there are the funds there to pay otherwise it could end up with the supermarket not being paid their money- though no money is actually taken, it being ring-fenced is to those of us as customers to the same effect as being taken.)

In a not very technical description; the cash is in limbo until the order is completed.

Well thats true, in a very naive way. The person logged on to the till has the capability of changing the price, but that does not mean they have the authority to do so, or the legal right.

For example, they have the capability to change the price of a £1 item to 10p, but they don't have the authority to do it just because the customer happens to be their sister. Similarly, they can't increase the price to £7.50 just because the customer was rude to them.

There's a huge difference between having the capability of doing something and the right/authority to do it.

And I really doubt a Tesco checkout assistant, or supervisor has the authority to lower a price just because an item was previously on sale at the lower price.

I was just pointing out that what Sarah was saying was incorrect :)

You are entitled to demand anything you want from anyone. However they do not have to give it to you.

Thats because you don't understand how online shopping at supermarket works. When you "place your order" online you are not actually placing an order. All you are doing is handing them a shopping list and asking the to nip round the store on Thursday morning and do your shopping for you.

You pay the price that is current when the person picks the item from the shelf, and that price may not be what it was when you "placed your order" online.

It can go both ways, the items can go up in between you "placing the order" and the person picking it, but the price can also go down due to an offer starting. Either way, you pay the current price.

Having said that, if you complain nicely, and don't upset the person on the phone, and explain that you are not happy about the situation they may give you something as a goodwill gesture.

I was under the impression that the barcode is scanned and the price comes up on the till and that they are set by a central computer. I was told in my local Tesco when I had something come up with an incorrect price that I had to go to customer services because they couldn't alter prices on the tills.

    Sorry, clearly I was wrong.

A superviser usually has a pin number they can input to override a price charged at a EPOS till. This is so that if you see something marked at 70p say but the system tries to charge you 75p then it can be corrected at the til. Otherwise you can go to customer service who can refund the 5p using a similar proceedure.

IMO Tesco have failed to deliver as advertised and so should make a gesture of goodwill.

I had a similar complaint a few years ago which wasn't resolved so I went to the manager and I said:
I shopped with you the other day and I had a problem which, despite queueing for 20 minutes at customer service while they served people who couldn't be bothered to queue at a checkout, has not been resolved.

I have one of your credit cards, I have an account at your bank and a mobile phone contract with you. I also do all of my monthly shopping with you as do all of my family and most of my friends. I do believe that you can resolve the problem if you choose to do so and any failure to do so will result in my withdrawal of all goodwill. I will go straight from here to the Carphone Warehouse and get my phone contract changed. Then I will go nextdoor to the bank and open a new account with them and apply for one of their credit cards and transfer my entire balance. Next month I will be doing my monthly shop at Asda and I will also make sure that all of my family and friends are made aware of the way I have been treated.

    Guess what happened next!
