But maybe I am living in a dream world. :D

Not sure about a dream world, but certainly one where money appears to grow on trees....

    Great idea...

Are you willing to pay tax at the levels needed to finance all this?

    I will if you will...

There's no need for this though.

All that needs to happen is for the super rich and the massively overpaid, to stop failing to pay the multiple 100s of millions in taxes that they should be paying, instead of hiding it in offshore accounts and the like, (with the help of certain banks!)

If this happened, and big multi-national companies like Amazon and Starbucks (and many others that seems to constantly evade tax,) paid THEIR taxes like they should, then the mere mortals on an ordinary wage would not need to fork out a PENNY in extra tax for some of what I mentioned to start happening.

If the bigwigs, and the rich and influential, paid taxes like they should on their multiple BILLIONS, then the ordinary citizen on their ordinary salary will not need to pay a PENNY extra for things like I mentioned in my post to start happening.

    You KNOW it's true. :D

I would like the cap on fees to be removed.

I am more than happy to sell my home to pay for my care if I need to, the benefits system was set up to help those in need who didn't have assets or the finance to help them receive the care they need.

I have children but they can support themselves and can have what ever is left over after I have used what I need. there is notam automatic right to I inherit a home or wealth from your family.

So, remove the cap, spend what is needed and don't ask the tax payer to support you if you have the funds to support yourself.

Now I will duck down behind a wall and wait for the missiles to fly!!!!!!!

I do agree with you in principle.

As I (and my parents!) get older it does focus my thoughts a bit - on the one hand I'm lucky my parents have *anything* I might inherit. On the other, it could be unlucky if they happen to need care that I could end up with nothing.

It just seems unfair in a way, from whatever perspective, that my leg up or otherwise depends on luck. In that respect inheritance is unfair full-stop really.

For my own later life direction to depend on chance seems... odd. And as I get older I'm all for what you say above philosophically. It would seem unfair if I looked at my neighbour gaining thrugh chance while I didn't however, as much as the other way round.

Perhaps inheritance should be banned, full-stop ;)

Interesting thoughts but don't you think 'luck' is everywhere. many many people work hard all their lives and end up with nothing and others end up with much more.

I fail to understand why that should of right be passed to the next generation, if you get some inheritance then you can do good with it, if you don't then you start on the blocks with others who haven't.

my main point is why should the tax payer today have the burden of paying for those who can afford to pay for themselves.

Yeah of course luck's everywhere, and really society should be about ironing that luck out as much as possible (from my perspective, anyway). As we've seen on other threads, there's less of a help for the leg up to those without any luck of wealthier parents etc. however, so it seems the system tends to take away without necessarily giving.

I don't have the answers, else I'd be a politician (or maybe not having the answers makes me ideally qualified? ;) ) Maybe if the state offered more support (before the need for care homes) to those who weren't lucky with inheritance etc., it might be easier to stomach giving the money back for care later, if able to afford it.

As ever though, systems, whatever they will be, will have people attempt to exploit them!

I'm all for the abolishing of inheritance and plan to spend the lot by the time my number is up and have fun doing so.

As for capping care home fees at £72k, what it you don't have £72k? Won't you have to sell your home anyway?

Not sure whether this is the right forum but

As of next year the government plan to cap care fees at £72k so you don't have to sell your parents home to pay for their care

My question is to the self righteous (text removed by MSE Forum Team) who pontificated about their tax dollar every time care fee funding was mentioned on this forum

Just how (text removed by MSE Forum Team) are you about this new on scale of 1 to 10?

    Between 5 and 5.3

  • On one hand as you mentioned selling your house, you may just about almost have an excuse for posting on this forum.

On the other hand, since you seem angry with the government, and all us self-righteous dollar-using, super-rich tax dodging ****ers, why are you bothering? My trust fund will pay for my care, by the way, while my children reap the rewards of my offshore bank accounts.

Oh, and on a scale of 1 to 10....0.

Yep 0. I value my right to live somewhere that doesn't smell of cabbage over anyone else's right to inherit.

Indeed: I've told my sons they should not expect to inherit anything from me as I plan on drinking all the assets...
