Yep - I believe you can even water the emulsion down - very MSE :money:

Woolies are doing a 7.5 litre tub at the moment for about £5, useless for painting (as I found out) but ideal for this sort of job

I've been told by many people to use pva glue to seal the plaster so that it prevents the paint to soak in, can i just use a primer instead of pva glue? does the primer do the same job as pva glue?

You can use paint but I have found that I get better results using PVA diluted to about 5:1. Just use a roller to put it on. It isn't that much more expensive than paint if you buy from a builders merchant.

DO NOT USE PVA GLU unless you want a great deal of hassle
emulsion paint does not stick to it .
use thinned down emulsion , use as directed on tin

I wouldn't advise using the glue, plaster needs to breath and to dry out, there is a lot of water used in the mix, and if you prevent it drying out you could end up with a problem damp and cracking etc

We've just had a lot of plastering done and we were told to use watered down matt emulsion NOT PVA.

Dont be confused anymore, just dont use PVA no matter what anyone tells you.

You go into the dulux website, or look at any instructions on thier tins, and no where does it say to apply PVA.

The only time PVA should be used for plaster is by a plasterer, never PVA new plastered walls prior to painting.

    Here is another tip.....

Dont use silk either on new plastered walls, what you should always do is apply a thin coat of matt emulsion, thin it down by approx 30-40% for your 'miscoat'

Then do another coat again thin down by 15-20%, and then you can go over with the silk.

But if your going for the matt, then do the miscoat like I mentioned, then do another coat again thinned, then do your third coat, working on the assumption you using a good quality make, none of that wickes kraaap
