Just not very attractive to look at the tatty steel wheels...

I was lucky mine came on alloys, the seller had sold the car they fitted, hence very cheap.

It hardly seemed worth the effort of fitting winters this time.

Don't forget they were not worth the effort last year either, indeed, they are so rarely needed let's hope come next winter this topic doesn't make a reappearance and people just buy tyres that perform best in the wet every winter.

    This is not Scandinavia.

Whether or not they were worth it this year does rather depend on where you live the UK though. Some areas were quite badly hit with snow. We definitely found them worth it.

This thread is why UK weather forecasts annoy me. There is no point having a UK wide weather forecast as to give any detail it would take over 5 minutes. It's time broadcasters realised the UK is actually quite a vertical country that has several climates.

As has been noted, people in Scotland would have benefitted from winter tyres as they are on a similar latitude to Scandinavia. London has had a very mild winter with almost no snow and has a totally different climate to the highlands.

I listen to Radio 5 live a lot while driving and this always annoys me - they should just forget weather reports (and traffic for the same reason). If you want to know the local weather there are lots of ways of getting that information, likewise traffic.

Errr, the OP states he lives in the south, which, again, was mild this winter.

Unless one lives on Ben Nevis then tyres for the wet are what is needed in the UK.

Winter tyres are for the wet.

Received wisdom though, is that below 7 degrees winters are best. All season apparently are a compromise all year round.

However what I'm really asking is people's opinion on how the rest of winter is likely to be temperature wise. I realise a crystal ball is needed for that of course.

I am not sure that you understand what I mean by "All season Tyres" I mean proper all season tyres I think you may be thinking of what are more commonly called summer tyres.

Basically it doesn't count unless it falls in London and then when it does it's nationwide panic, armageddon, fuel shortages, shops run out of milk, bread and baked beans. A bit like the pre-christmas chaos where the shops close for two days and everyone just loses the plot.
