Received wisdom though, is that below 7 degrees winters are best. All season apparently are a compromise all year round.
However what I'm really asking is people's opinion on how the rest of winter is likely to be temperature wise. I realise a crystal ball is needed for that of course.I am not a cat (But my friend is)0 -
I agree .. That's why I've never owned any.
If I was in the southern end of England I would agree too. In the north of Scotland however they make perfect sense.
Contrary to popular belief winter tyres are not just for snow and ice but are designed for when the temperature is below 8 deg C and will outperform virtually all summer/all season tyres below this temp.0 -

No rush to change them wait 10 days or so (based on Birmingham)0 -
This may be a silly question, but is that 8 deg C air temp, road temp or tyre temp ?0
-
I believe it would be air temp but could be wrong with that.0

Hmmm my guess was either tire or (more accurately possibly) tread temperature - as the difference between winter and normal tyres is how the rubber compound behaves at lower temperatures. I suspect that both are likely to be well above air temperature after the first couple of miles ...0

I would have agreed with you in the past, but mine came 2nd hand and very cheap with 6mm tread. While I'm wearing them, there's no wear on my summer tyres
That was the same for me. I'd never have bought a set but when they came with the car I thought I might as well use them.
Probably been less than 20 days that they've actually been of any benefit with low enough temperature.
Just not very attractive to look at the tatty steel wheels...
