If water can get in then fluid can get out (which is doesn't).

Turn the car upside down, and it will...

Can someone explain to me where this water comes from in a sealed system?

Brake fluid is hygroscopic - it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. One source is through the breather hole in the master cylinder cap.

£35 is a reasonable enough price - not a rip off on it's own - but it ought to have been included in the service deal which is not the cheapest I've heard of.

You have to be doing enough miles to justify these service plans.

I completely agree with the OP that it's a sneaky trick - if it's recommended - as it surely will be - there should be no extra cost.

My BMW has a service plan that cost £405 for 2 years or 50K miles.

In 16 months I've already had around £600 worth of servicing.

The first brake-fluid change is 3 years from production date (not 1st registration) and then every 2 years.

    I wouldn't miss it out.

The service plan information should tell you exactly what you are buying. I trust you had a copy before signing up? If not complain and cancel, if you did you are supposed to read it.

£35 every couple of years is cheaper than potentially expensive clutch mechanism parts as 'brake' fluid is now also hydraulic clutch fluid on many vehicles.

£35 isn't a bad price to have the brake fluid changed. I recently paid £59 at Audi.

Yes and I agree, but unfortunately due to strict daily targets set out by managers who've came from a sales background (ie have never picked up a spanner) and the fact that changing brake fluid on a modern car is often such a ballache (due to the complex ABS systems), the technicians are unlikely to change it at all. Most likely they'd suck out the fluid from the reservoir (using something resembling a turkey baster) and pour some fresh fluid in so that it LOOKED like it'd been changed.
