Cancelling Sky - More Than 31 Days Notice

Options
We are moving abroad in the middle of April so I phoned to cancel our Sky subscription as of 9 April - to make sure it ended when I wanted. I was told that I could only give exactly 31 days notice and no more - so the cancellation would take effect on 25 March. As I wanted to have the benefit of Sky over Easter this was not acceptable. My wife had a twitter exchange with @SkyHelpTeam and was told the same thing. I sent a copy of my letter of complaint to my MP, Crispin Blunt, who followed the matter up with Sky. Lo and behold! Today I received an email from a Service Excellence Consultant, Fix & Learn (!) saying that she was unsure why I had been told this as they only require a minimum of 31 days notice. Being a cynical soul I do wonder if this policy is only available to those people who agitate sufficiently!

  • Couldn't you just ring them up and give notice 31 days before April 9th?

Probably got enough on his plate emigrating.
And why should he be dictated to by Sky? they should have just placed the cancellation on the first phone call.

Sky are well known to ignore the contract terms and make it difficult to cancel.

When my dad died I phoned Sky to cancel his Sky subscription.

They told me he had to give a month's notice!

I then cancelled my own subscription too. Never going back to them.

That is a nonsense. I had the same thing when my Mother died.

I just told them she couldn't give a months notice as she was no longer around to do so, and they couldn't hold her to the contract as she had died.

The signal went off the next day.

Been through this with a few different companies.
They can expect to get paid and have a legal right to.
Debts still need to get paid once you pass on....if you have assets.
  • @dresdendave. You are right - I could phone up to cancel on 9 March (and that is what I would have done if the escalation had not had the desired effect). But I don't see why I should jump through that particular hoop just because Sky hope I will miss the date and thereby pay them money for a service I do not use!

I was told exactly the same thing yesterday by a sky rep on the phone. I tried to make her understand "minimum 31 days" means it could be more than 31 days but she was quite adamant about this. In the end I just gave up. Do you have any contact for the service excellence consultant where I could raise it too.

I called about 35 days before and they were fine about it.

Such problems go away if you post a written cancellation letter by "signed for" delivery. Be sure to include all relevant details and "do not call me - I'm moving abroad".

(That last bit doesn't apply if you are simply trying it on, to get a discount offer.)
