Cold Calls

Hoping someone can help.
I keep getting cold calls on my landline from a PPI reclaims company.
It just shows on my phone as 'Out Of Area' so I can't just block it.
They leave a recorded message on my answer phone every time stating the usual rubbish. Amongst other options they say I can Press 9 to be removed from their database!!
Can anyone tell me if this is safe to do or would I just be opening up another can of worms, in the guise of more cold calls.
Thanks in advance.

DON'T PRESS ANY KEYS! Best to just hang up.
If its started recently, check who you have given your number to, and whether they have your authority to pass on to other firms.
There are callblocker phones that can filter out withheld numbers, and/or add known unwanted numbers to blocklist, though 'out of area' suggests it may come from outside of UK, which may not work.
Caller ID needed on your line, which it seems you already have.
Check and add your number to the Telephone Preference Service site, which should cut down a lot of UK callers, anyway.

With the new col caller law, mention the £500k fine if you get to speak to anyone!
afterthought- check with your phone service provider, mention these calls. they may have line features to block calls with no ID..Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

Thanks for that brightonman.
I thought it was best not to press any key, but wanted to check.
I do have Caller ID and the facility to block calls, but will ask my provider if it's possible to use this facility when no number is shown. Thanks for the tip.
I thought I was on the TPS register, but I will double check that too.
Very helpful, thank you.0 -

Get a call blocker device, I used to get tons of calls from unknown, UK numbers and International.
After buying a call blocker they stopped instantly. It will block unknown, withheld and private numbers etc.
One thing i noticed is that my phone just showed international previously but the call blocker actually shows a number.
Its funny to scroll through the logs and see them keep trying to get through, First its withheld then private then numbers actually show as they try to get past my blocker.
If a number does get through i simply press the block button and they cannot call again.
All they get when they phone is CLICK and it cuts them off.

Get a call blocker device
You need caller display for it to work.over 73 but not over the hill.0 -
Can pressing numbers on the keypad during a received call really cause charges, or is this just an urban myth?0

TPS - absolutely useless. Many companies just ignore the fact that you are registered with TPS - perhaps the threat of £500K will help in the future0

I got the BT8500 phone in December. Not a single unwanted call has got through since. I don't even get disturbed by it ringing. When I check the call log there have been numbers listed most days, but they are decreasing in frequency so perhaps my number is slowly getting taken off databases? I also put a call blocker app on my mobile & that has also cut calls that get through to nil. Looks like blocking these scum is the way to go. If they don't get through to anyone they really will be wasting their own time & not ours.0
